Is Celebrating Birthdays Un-Islamic?
Question asked by Fauzia Qureshi.
Posted on: Thursday, July 31, 2008 - Hits: 1206
Question:
I would like to know what Islam says about celebrating birthdays. Would appreciate your reply in the light of the Qur'an and Sunnah.
Answer:
Islam has no objection to celebrating birthdays. Such functions and ceremonies relate to culture and if there is nothing immoral or objectionable in the celebration itself (eg. vulgarity, over spending etc) one can carry on with them.
The Prophet (sws), it is known, used to fast on his own birthday. It would be nice to add this feature to our birthdays. In the case of young children, one or both parents can fast as an expression of gratitude to the Almighty.
