Did the Prophet (sws) crack Jokes?
Question asked by Fahad Ahmed.

Question:
I have some questions about the personality of Prophet Muhammad (sws) and the history of Islam. We read in history and hadith that Prophet Muhammad (sws) mostly use to be in the company of his Companions and friends. I wanted to know if the Prophet Muhammad (sws) was a serious person or did he also listen to jokes of some of his companions and use to participate in their jokes?
Answer:
We learn from the hadith and sirah that the Prophet (sws) was basically a serious person. He had a great task before him and was dedicated to diligently achieve it. A person whose duty was to warn people of the impending doom cannot be supposed to be lighthearted and loving jokes etc.
However, the Prophet (sws) was a well balanced personality. He did sometimes talk lightly and enjoyed such talk from others. The books of sirah record many such occasions. You might have heard about the following two jokes which are basically linguistic puns.
Once, someone asked the Prophet (sws) if the Prophet (sws) could give him a camel to ride on. The Prophet (sws) replied in the negative but said that he would give him the baby of a she-camel. The person bemusedly asked: "What am I going to do with a baby of a she-camel?" The Prophet replied: "Is there any camel which is not born from a she-camel?"
At another instance, the Prophet (sws) was walking about with some of his friends as well as his cousin Ali (who was younger than him). They were eating dates. Those who know what a date is, know that it contains a "pit" which one needs to spit out. So they were going to town on these dates and the Prophet kept putting his pits in front of Ali. When they got done, Ali had twice the pits of everyone else, and the Prophet was like "Do you guys notice who ate the most?"
Once the Prophet (sws) told an old lady that no old lady would enter Paradise. She was shocked. The Prophet (sws) then told her that all ladies destined to go to the Paradise will be made young.
