Accountability for Evil Thoughts
Question asked by Nida Awan.
Posted on: Tuesday, November 14, 2006 - Hits: 981
Question:
The Qur'an says that no-one says a single word except that there are angels by his side to record those words. 'Abdullah Yusuf 'Ali in his interpretation of this verse, says that the word itself is the action. If thoughts are kept in the mind, they may be forgiven, but as soon as you speak your thoughts, they become the action and you commit a sin. I would like to ask you that what if a person speaks his thoughts in solitude? What if he hates a specific person, but he does not say it on his face or in front of others, but says it alone? Will he still be committing a sin? Because some people have a habit of speaking their thoughts out loud.
Answer:
The Almighty does not hold a person accountable for thoughts that may surface in our mind involuntarily. If however we continue nursing such evil thoughts that itself is watering an evil in ourselves and which can be harmful for the purity of our minds and hearts then we shall be held responsible for them.
In other words, thoughts are not accountable so far they are involuntary and compulsive. The moment we knowingly nourish them and start working them in our minds they have the very potential of being held accountable. Similarly feelings of hate for somebody may surface in our minds for a moment but nursing such feelings can contaminate our hearts and minds. This again will hold us accountable for them
