Christian vs Muslim Concept of Salvation
Question asked by Javed.

Question:
I am a student of Ph.D program in Christian university. I am a Christian. I would like to write my Doctoral thesis on kind of comparision studies . I am looking forward to compare the concept of Salvation in Islam and Christianity. Please give your views on this concept in both religions
Answer:
Islam claims that salvation of an individual is contingent on following the divine guidance provided to us through innate guidance, universal moral values and the revealed guidance. One has to believe in the Messengers of God and the guidance they provided. Mere belief does not however render someone immune from the final judgment. One has to follow the guidance through his life doing good and avoiding evil. Islam strictly negates the idea of salvation based on mere attachment to any religious (opposed to the Christian belief of original sin and belief in Jesus) or racial group (opposed to the Jewish claim of being God's chosen people). It says that we have to have faith in God and his messengers and then follow what He has taught.
As for those who have not been exposed to the divine religion they would be judged considering the knowledge they have been endowed with. The basic thing is that whether an individual follows what he believes to be the truth or not. A Christian can of course attain salvation if he follows what he sincerely believes to be the truth and a Muslim can go the other way if he is not a sincere seeker of the truth. The basic question thus is attitude towards seeking the truth. Whether or not we are able to achieve the actual truth does not matter. It is the sincerity in its quest that matters.
