In the Name of Allah,

Let us Revive our Institute- Masjid

Arabic word masjid means “place of worship,” is from Arabic verb sajada means “bow down.” These are primarily the “houses which Allah has permitted to be raised to honor, for the celebration in them, of his name: in them is He glorified in the morning and the evening” (Al Quran, 24: 36). In Madinah, Prophet (Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) purchased a piece of land and a masjid was built upon it. It was the place where in the holy companions used to offer the first-time prayers under the stewardship of the holy Prophet (Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) besides settling other issues, where he (Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) delivered his addresses, which contained not only appeals for obedience to Allah but also regulations affecting the religious, moral and social life of the community, from where he controlled the religious and political community of Islam. Like the Dar-an-Nadwa which once served as the place for taking all important decisions by the Quraish of Makkah, in the Prophets masjid all matters crucial to the religious and social life of the Muslims were discussed and justice was administered. The holy Prophet (Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) established here an educational institute known as ‘suffa’ for the teaching and training of his companions.

Masjids occupy a significant position in Islam since the period of the Prophet Muhammad (Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam). It is an indicator which shows that the area is populated by Muslims. It is evident that the number of masjids continued to grow with the spread of Muslims in different parts of the globe. That is why it is termed as a sh’r (culture) in Islam. A masjid is a nucleus round which the life of a Muslim rotates. For Allah, the best part of the earth is that piece of land on which a masjid is built. People who love Allah are identified by their love for the masjid. On the dreadful day of resurrection, when there will not be any shade (to escape from scorching heat) such people shall be afforded protection by Allah under the cover of the throne. (Bukhari, vol.1, chapter Adhan, Hadith No.629) Alas! We all are ignorant regarding this precious institute of masjid. Its economical as well as social and moral sides have been wasted. Its important role has been ignored by the Muslims.

The masjids today dotting the entire Muslim world, can still serve the same purpose and become the nerve centre of the community life of the believers, they can also restore the unity of the Ummah by transcending all barriers of race, colour, nationality and language. They already have that what others are trying to find out. They do not have to explore the venues and resources for their schemes of up-liftment. They have only to pay attention to the wealth that is theirs and put it to the best use. We have countless masjids spread all over the vast lands in Asia, Africa and some other parts of the Europe but almost all are in the wrong hands. Had this institute been in right hands Muslims would have made this world paradise? Not only human life but also animal world would have got peace and tranquility.

Oh brothers and sisters! You judge yourself by what you feel capable of doing, while others judge you by what you have already done. You have immense wealth in your possession but you have not used it properly. Please wakeup! and take a rigid stand only on truly important issues. Each of us has given time. To realize the value of years, ask a person who is in his last moments of life. To realize the value of months, ask a mother who has given birth to a dead baby. We can, if we think we can! Accept the past, do not brood over it. It is in our hands. Start offering salath(nimaz) five times a day. Spend your wealth properly. Don’t delay that may not only be dangerous but even disastrous. You have built masjids almost at every few miles. But Alas! You are not in a position to study Islam. You have bases, you have institutions then what is wrong with you.

The masjid is indeed an order or chain of nerve canters of Muslim society, founded by the holy Prophet (Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam). Thus a model was already set up in the first Masjid at Madinah for all the various functions which have to be performed by us on the premises of these Masjids. What is needed now is to take up the works which were done in the first Masjid and that will open before you a new dimension of your role as a Muslim human being in this universe. It is our grave responsibility to take stock of the prevailing situations, discover our past and plan to change with an eye on the future. Once we do it, Allah will come to our rescue. “Allah will not change the fate of a people unless they change what is in themselves” (Al Quran, 13:10)

Al-Mawrid - Present and Future

Introduction

Al-Mawrid has been engaged in promoting research and education in Islamic Studies in the society since the early 1980s. This institution owes its establishment to the perception that the process of attaining the true understanding of Islam is not being carried out in our ummah in a judicious and appropriate manner. Lost in the maze of sectarian prejudices and political wrangling, the message of Islam based only on the Qur’an and Sunnah has become alien to Muslims.

We, at Al-Mawrid, feel that the biggest challenge facing Muslims is the revival of our great but lost heritage of academic excellence. Hence the objectives of the institute are to conduct and facilitate academic and research work on Islamic Sciences, to educate people on its basis and to publish and disseminate it through all available means.

A brief detail of our current and future projects is as under:

I. Current Projects

a) Research

Abdus Sattar Ghauri has been working on various projects related to Biblical Studies for the last three decades and has recently completed his book: Muhammad Foretold in the Bible by Name. Currently, he is working on the Urdu translation of the second edition of his earlier book: The Only Son offered for Sacrifice, Isaac or Ishmael.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi has been working on various research projects on Islam. Of high legal, social and political import amongst his works are Mizan (Scale), a comprehensive book on his understanding of Islam, and Burhan (Conclusive Argument), a collection of his critiques on contemporary religious viewpoints. His ongoing annotated translation of the Qur’an, al-Bayan (The Exposition) is indispensable to the understanding of his approach in exegesis.

Moiz Amjad is working on the project of Compilation of Comprehensive Hadith Texts. This is a unique research work in its approach: it consists of the compilation of all variant texts of a narrative on a particular topic appearing in seventeen major compilations of Hadith and then molding these variant texts into one comprehensive narrative. This work is being carried out in both Urdu and English with brief notes on the compiled Hadith.

Asif Iftikhar is currently working on completion of a comparative study of Javed Ahmad Ghamidi and Abu al-A‘la Mawdudi in relation to their interpretive approaches as applied to the theory of jihād and the state. This work is based on Mr Iftikhar’s Master’s thesis at the McGill University, Canada. He is also a PhD candidate at McGill where his dissertation focus is on the Islamic legal development in Pakistan.

Shehzad Saleem has taken up research on the History of the Qur’an, a part of which also forms his doctoral thesis from the University of Wales, UK. His work addresses some nagging questions related to the revelation, collection and transmission of the Qur’an. These questions include narratives found in our legacy on the incompleteness of the Qur’an, scribal errors found in it, its variant readings, chronology of its compilation, order of the surahs, and manuscript studies.

b) Literature and Academics

Ammar Khan Nasir and his assistants are working on the preparation of explanatory articles and essays on various aspects of Islam, which includes a comparative as well as a critical analysis of Ghamidi’s treatise on Islam: Mizan.

Under the supervision of Manzoor ul Hassan mad Ghamidi are being transcribed in the form of)various lectures of Javed Ah explanatory articles. With the assistance of Moazzam Safdar, Manzoor ul Hassan also oversees the editing and formatting of various books which are published by the institute.

A Query Section is also working under this department. Rafi Mufti and Talib Mohsin along with others give answers to questions received through emails, letters and websites.

A Translation Section is working on the English translations of the various works of the Farahi school. Currently, Jhangeer Hanif and Tariq Mahmood Hashmi have been assigned this translation work.

c) Education

Work being done for the cause of Islamic Education includes arrangement of various Workshops in Lahore, Islamabad, Faisalabad and Karachi. The topics touch important religious, philosophical and ethical issues facing our society. These workshops aim to persuade people to acquire knowledge about Islam, to bring them closer to its truer understanding and to encourage them to support it.

Currently, a nine-month (three-semester) course for ladies is also being conducted at the premises of Al-Mawrid. Teachers include Dr Khalid Zaheer, Rafi Mufti, Talib Mohsin, Sami Mufti, Sajid Hameed, Mrs Kaukab Shehzad and Hafiz Muhammad Ibrahim.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Dr. Khalid Zaheer, Dr. Munir Ahmed, Sajid Hameed and Mrs. Kaukab Shehzad participate in various talk shows and discussions on Islam that are aired on various channels.

In addition, our scholars are regularly invited as guest speakers on various occasions and at institutes, schools, colleges and universities such as Civil Services Academy, NIPA, Pakistan Administrative Staff College, LUMS, and the Punjab University.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi also regularly meets people from all walks of life throughout the week, except for Thursdays and Sundays, between 12 noon and 1pm. Dr Khalid Zaheer and Mrs. Kaukab Shehzad, conduct regular weekly Qur’an classes in Lahore as well as in Karachi.

d) Operations

Besides administration and management, the Operations Department of the institute is involved in the marketing of various books published by the institute. High quality DVDs and CDs of various lectures are also being produced for global distribution.

We are in the process of revamping our website, www.al-mawrid.org. Furthermore, we have developed a new website, www.tv-almawrid.org, which aims to carry all audio and video lectures of scholars and associates of the institute.

A series of programs has been planned for production based on our understanding of Islam and on the current issues faced by people. The idea is to promote Islamic education in an easy to understand language for the consumption of the masses. For this, a modern studio is being built in the premises of the institute.

e) Affiliated Concerns

“Understanding Islam” (www.understanding-islam.org) has taken up the task of explaining Islam in the light of the Qur’an and Sunnah and in answering questions on or about Islam.

“Studying Islam” (www.studying-islam.org) offers distance learning courses on Islam and Islamic Studies.

Biographical sites on the life and works of Amin Ahsan Islahi (www.amin-ahsan-islahi.com) and Javed Ahmad Ghamidi (www.ghamidi.org) are providing information to the society.

Dr Khalid Zaheer’s personal website (www.khalidzaheer.com) carries his articles, lectures and answers to various questions.

A website (www.humsubdost.org) caters for the grooming and entertainment of the young generation.

Ishraq (www.ghamidi.org), in Urdu, and Renaissance (www.monthly-renaissance.com), in English, are our two monthly journals. A wide range of latest research, articles, critiques and their responses appear in these journals.

Mr. Rehan Yusufi publishes Ishraq Da‘wah edition from Al-Mawrid Center, Karachi.

II. Future Projects

a) Institute of Islamic Sciences

This is our dream project. The need for such an institute that has the potential to produce good scholars with a thorough understanding of slam needs no elaboration. Our ummah is devoid of such scholars and the masses are ignorant, confused, or ill informed. Al-Mawrid plans to set up an institute which will offer Bachelors, Masters and eventually PhD degrees to students in Islamic Sciences.

b) Chain of Schools

Our goal, in line with our mission to educate the society, is to set up a chain of schools in Pakistan, which groom children who are not only well versed in English, Urdu, Social Studies and physical and social sciences but also have high morals and are aware of their religious heritage. In the near future, we plan to open one school in Karachi and one in Lahore.

c) Training Institutes

This is an extremely important project as teachers play a pivotal role in the character building of a nation. We have developed short and medium term courses to train teachers for our new schools, as well as for teachers from other schools, colleges and universities. The objective is to drive home the basic message of Islam, clarify confusions and communicate to them the ethics it teaches. Besides training teachers, we also plan to offer courses for all interested individuals, but we want to focus especially on women and children.

d) Weekend Schools

In order to educate children and instruct children of various schools, we plan to offer a weekend school program for this purpose.

________

The institute is run by a board of governors. It has a customized ERP system in place for professional and transparent accounts management. Accounts are audited every year. Donors may obtain tax exemption for their contributions to Al-Mawrid.

We need your support, in any form, for the above mentioned ongoing and upcoming projects. Your criticism and feedback is also welcome. The challenges that the Muslim ummah faces in the present times are numerous. We believe that the most significant amongst them is to present the correct understanding of Islam to both Muslims and non-Muslims and to educate people on that understanding and also to open careers for young minds in Islamic Studies. Al-Mawrid has therefore dedicated itself to the task of Islamic research and education. We invite you to take a closer look at what we are doing and, in case you feel convinced that we are undertaking a worthwhile effort, extend a helping hand to our efforts.

Discussion Forum: Understanding the Sunnah

Topic: Status of Fiqh

maskxone

If we accept that Sunnah is transmitted through Tawatur and its transmission is independent of Ahadith. Also Ahadith can not add to the corpus of religion. Now as I understand Fiqh is derived from Quran and Ahadith. So the questions are:

1) If Ahadith are not source of Islam then what is the status of Fiqh which is derived from Ahadith.

2) Fiqh makes certain things lawful or unlawful for Muslims based on Qayas. Are we obliged to follow the fiqh?

3) Majority of the Muslims believe that Ahadith are the primary source of Sunnah. Now if a Muslim state is formed and rulers are from the majority. What will be method of forming the constitution? Will they base it on Sunnah or Ahadith or Fiqh. And if its Fiqh which school or sect will they follow? According to your opinion will this be a true Islamic state if they follow the Ahadith strictly or any one of the sects?

Tariq Hashmi (Moderator)

Would like you to keep in mind the following two things and also first resolve the issue what fiqh is. It will make it easier for both of us to understand each other.

1. We believe that all the schools of thought follow the basic contents of religion, the Qur'an and the Sunnah. Some differ only in considering the individual reports as Sunnah. None of them has lost the true source.

2. Ahadith are every important explanatory source. They tell us the Prophetic wisdom and his understanding of the religious directives and his uswah hasanah the way he discharged the religious directives) and his life history.

Also please note that a Muslim state can rightfully make laws based on social customs which have have no basis in religion. The sources of religion and sources of Religious Knowledge in Islam are different things.

Please comment. And explain what do you understand by the Fiqh and the nature of difference between the four schools for example.

ibrahim

1) Surely Ahadith Cannot be THE LONE source for any Religious Matter. On the Other Hand they are The MOST reliable Source for the "Uswa" of Pro. Muhammad (sws) & his Wisdom & Seerah etc. & that's why Hadith is SO Important, So we Do NOT Degrade it.

The Prevailing Fiqhs give us light in many parts of the Shariah of Islam that are based on Qur'an and Sunnah, and what they have said on the basis of Ahadith, that is still very helpful for our Knowledge as it always progresses on the basis of the work done in the past.

2) The things that has been declared lawful or unlawful in The Fiqhs based on Qayas etc. are just the "Ijtihaad" (i.e. opinion) of these great scholars but we are not obliged to follow any thing other than Qur'an & Sunnah. But if one is satisfied with any opinion of these great scholars (in a certain matter) should follow him, This means that one can follow one Fiqh in a matter and can follow any other Fiqh in another matter unless & untill he is doing this on the basis of some solid reasonign & not doing so just because of his mere will/likeness etc.

3) Its only the majority of the current Muslims who believe that the Ahadith are the primary source of Sunnah/Islam. The Fact is that almost allL (more than 90%) Great scholars of the past (including Imam Shafi) are of the Opinion that the Holy Quran and the "Khabar-e-Mutawatir (i.e. the Sunnah)" are the only Primary sources of Islam & Hadith should related to them & should be Accepted behind them as a secondary source but then the Likes of Imam Shafi'i & Imam Ibn-e-Hazam have presented their own opinion based on some other factors that hadith is Always Based on these two primary sources & If there looks some contradiction then that is because of our "Fehm (Understanding)" etc. So one may (or may not) accept their opinion if he agrees (ot Does not agree) with their reasoning.

Please Note that All states of Muslims (eg. Pak. SA, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan ...) are "Muslim" states as Muslims are in majority in them so the method of forming the constitution in them is very simple. All matters shoud be discussed in The parliament & if there is difference of opinion then the vote majority will be the rule (i.e in only those cases where there is no direct/clear order present in Quran & Sunnah) and surely the "ijtihaad of parliament" Will be based on Quran & Sunnah (The direct sources) & it's obvious that they'll benefit too from the guidance present in Ahadith or Fiqh of ALL schools/sects But People will be BOUND to FOLLOW the rules Passed by the Parliament only.

But the people who do not agree the passed rules will adopt the same procedure for trying to change that rule as they do now in their daily.

I hope this will Help us in carrying on this discussion ahead.

Thank you for the detailed reply. Sorry for replying late as I am busy with office work. I would like to point out my understanding:

1) By Fiqh I mean the laws. Or the methods to form the laws. I think (i am not sure though) that all these Imams had different approach. e.g. some gave more importance to Sunnah and others gave more Importance to Ahadith.

2) I understand your opinion on the status and meaning of Sunnah and Ahadith. And it seems very logical to me. (I believe in applying logic to religion and MashaAllah our religion is complete in that sense too)

3) Now my confusion is more related to certain laws which are not found in Quran and Sunnah but we get them from Narration which can have some doubt (even if its iota of doubt). E.g. lets take the example of stonning by death. I know the logic behind this punishment and i accept that. Also it has very strict conditions which are very unlikely to exist for this punishment to be executed. Now i am not sure about it but if we say that this law is know through ahadith. And Ahadith are not 100% reliable. But according to fiqh based on ahadith this punishment is allowed. ( I feel that punishments like these are allowed in Islam but not encouraged and it is upto Qazi to decide depending on situation). But if extreme punishments like these are only known by ahadith can these be established as law of the country? Is there a chance that a Qazi giving such punishment may be going beyond the allowed limits?

This was my original question.

Your answers are very nice and explaining. But can you elaborate further on the last point. "Is there a chance that a Qazi giving such punishment may be going beyond the allowed limits?"

Tariq Hashmi (Moderator)

As I tried to explain in my earlier response national laws can be formed even on customs and cultural values. The Ahadith when we have seen that do not go against the Qru'an, the Sunnah, the established historical facts and common sense are also extremely important explanatory source. They tell us the way the Prophet understood and applied the religious directives. Therefore, the Muslim scholarship has used them as a very important tool.

Punishment of rajam cannot be given merely on the pretex that the ahdadith show that some of the people were punished this way. The Qur'an in no unclear terms tells that the punishment of adultery is flogging the criminal with a hundred lashes and cancelling his nikah with a chaste partner and rejection of his testimony in future.

However, the Prophet did stone some people according the Qur'anic directive regarding the punishment of those who create nuisance in the land (fasaad fil ardh). These criminals were not stoned because they were married but because they had started raping the innocent women openly making a mockery of law and putting the society in danger.

This punishment has been mentioned in the Surah Maidah of the Quran verse 4.

A Qazi has to see whether an accused merely committed adultery forced by passion or his act is tantamount to creating disorder in the society. He has to use his full knowledge and do all possible investigation before sentencing the criminal. If he had done this honestly he will not be crossing the limits.

Tariq Hashmi

Who do you think is the major culprit?? The God-father and his protected child, the general who desecrated the Constitution rebelled against his masters, launched a coup and then acted as defac to judge to expel his prey, or the young boys and girls, some bordering infacy, who answered to what they thought was the call of the Qur'an?

Who do you think is to be held responsible for the wild massacre of the innocent children?
Who would buy into the claims of the killers?

Who do you think is going to make the scoundrels pay for their crime?

I am putting these questions here for i am desperate to know what others think is the end of story.

All input is welcome.

A worth reading article by Dr.Shahid Masood regarding the same.

Extremely painful!

salmant

I had posted these comments in another topic, on July 9th, 07 (before the operation bagan), my comments were in response to a participant's question that what can we say of a person who first calls for Jihad and then runs away from it (referring to the running away of Abdul Aziz, Khateeb of Lal Masjid). I copy my comments here:

With due respect, I disagree with the question that has been raised here, it is not a matter of "Jihad", so how can "running away" from it have any relevance here?

When there is a crime, or some unexplainable incident, one very useful way to investigate it is to analyze, "who is the major beneficiary from all this". You start your investigation from the major beneficiary and use that information as a working hypothesis for further investigation.

Who else has gained more from this incident politically, than the our President himself?

Because of the high correlation of Lal masjid disturbances with the CJ case, APC, May12th etc. it is highly probable that the Maulanas were actually the puppets whose strings were in the hands of the Govt. And now, most probably the Govt would kill them to remove any evidence of this and to declare itself champion against the extremists.

But while all of this is there, I wonder what were our more 'learned' scholars doing. When situation got out of hand, they went to talk with the maulana brothers, Yes. The Wifaqul Madaris took some action against them. Yes. Only when the situation got out of hand, the esteemed scholars issued statements saying the steps taken by maulana brothers are not legitimate according to Islam, Yes.....but I am very sad, because,

Had it been about 'women rights' they would have spoken much earlier and much harsher. They could have been helped in preventing it, instead of cleaning the mess now. For the future, they could have elaborated a code-of-ethics for the Khateebs, preventing them to use the Quran and Sunnah in vain, and particularly the word 'Jihad'. They should have now understood the structural problem in their education system which results in foolishly ambitious people who end up being instruments in the hands of the exploiters.

But...

Even now they are innocent enough to consider the maulana brothers as merely "naughty kids" and would suggest the Govt to act as "kind parents". And they will keep protecting and justifying the other maulana brothers in the country giving similar khutbas. Any criticism on the role of these esteemed scholars, would continue to be considered as "lack of love for Deen", and "an attempt to start a new Fitna" because people like me are "blindly influenced by west"...

But regardless of whoever has or has not influenced me, I am sad for my country and the state of religion in it...

raushan

Refer to this issue, we may assume there are three types of Muslims around the world.

First, those who believe armed struggle is only for defence .To them the so called jihad is not correct. Moreover its not the right way to to establish a sharia based society.-------they do what they believe.

Second ,the group of people who believe that rest of the world is our enemy and an armed struggle is the only way/option to establish the law of God.--------they do what they believe.

Third is a bigger group who neither personally involve in armed struggle nor declare it wrong. They speak, write and cry on the street in the favor of armed struggle but never give their enemies a chance to taste their blood.

They play safe (in this world).-------They do not do what they believe.

Why do Prayers create more Problems for a Believer
Question asked by Saima Arooj.
Posted on: Monday, January 15, 2007 - Hits: 393

Question:
I have noticed that whenever i start reciting Quran for the achievement of my any dua, Allah tests me more and more and does not answer my that prayer urgently. I face alot of problems, obstacles or pains in my day to day life. I guess when I try to be near to Him my grades starts getting higher and thats why He tests me. So, as a result I leave reading the Quran. People tell me that more worship brings more tests and problem. I am already tired of tests so cant bear more and so I leave all good things to avoid further tests by Allah.

People also say that if one keeps on thinking about one particular prayer or runs after one thing all the time Allah never grants so, its better to be care free soon you will see that your prayer will reach point of achievement. is all that true? Am I doing right by leaving all good things. I am a person who thinks instead of watching Tv, watching movies on cable or listening to music its better to worship Allah. But when I spend my most of time in reciting Quran or saying Nawafil i face a lot of tests. I cant face tests. I am already going through a tough time so then what should I do to utilise my time. Life is spending useless.

In future can I write directly to Mehmood sahib on his G mail address or not?

Answer:

The Holy Qur'an says that prayer is a very important shield against the difficulties and hardships we face in this world.

The Almighty says that if one perseveres and seeks Allah's help through prayer he is helped by the faith in God and his abounding help. It does not meant that the difficulties are curtailed and the problems are solved as by magic. It means that it develops our faith in God and gives us the wisdom to see that how insignificant are these trials and what great reward will we get if we persevere and have faith in the Almighty Allah. God gives us courage and grants us with understanding the nature of this life on earth. When we are sure that what we do in this life and what we face here in this world is going to add to our rewards in the afterlife we find the courage to brave any difficultly and overlook any problem. It was what the Prophet (sws) would do when facing difficulties. He would stand in prayer before his Lord and seek His help.

I believe that you need to correct the notion that remembering God through prayer and recitation of the Qur'an adds to our difficulties. The relation of the problems with your interaction with God does not necessarily mean what you have concluded. It can be absolutely coincidental. Your faith might be tested through this. Therefore, I would suggest you to further seek God's help and guidance through prayer again to cope with this problem.

I pray to the Almighty that he helps you out of these problems and guides you out of such thoughts.

Regards,
