Message: I explain, Ibrahim, your reply by the following example.

Drinking alcohol is forbidden in Islam, perhaps because it makes the drinker drowsy, delirious, disoriented, staggering and unconscious etc. It must be remembered that those people who are habitual of drinking do not suffer from these conditions. Like you said, the music, which does not direct us to the wrong things is not haram, please tell, Is any dose of alcohol (except used for preparing the medicine) which does not cause the drinker drowsy, delirious, disoriented, staggering and unconscious etc, not haram??

It must be remembered that music is not such a thing, which was not present at the times of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his companions (Ra) i.e. it (music) was present those times. I mean to say any sort of music is not flawless in Islam only if any example is found used by the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his companions (Ra).

Message: Brother Loveall, PLZ don't MIX the things. Music & Alcohol Can NOT be Combined as the TWO r Totally diffirent things. Alcohol, as u've Described too, Even it's ONE drop is NOT free from its WRONG effects.BUT that's NOT the case of MUSIC. Only when ONE will listen the WRONG music, wrong EFFECTS will/can appear, So HOW the TWO things can be taken as SAME.

& Do U KNOW that Our Prophet allowed the Girls to keep on BEATING the DUFF on Eid day when Hazrat Abu Bakar asked them to STOP.

Sahih Bukhari:

Volume 2, Book 15, Number 70:

Narrated Aisha:

Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) came to my house while two girls were singing beside me the songs of Buath (a story about the war between the two tribes of the Ansar, the Khazraj and the Aus, before Islam). The Prophet (p.b.u.h) lay down and turned his face to the other side. Then Abu Bakr came and spoke to me harshly saying, "Musical instruments of Satan near the Prophet (p.b.u.h) ?" Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) turned his face towards him and said, "Leave them." When Abu Bakr became inattentive, I signalled to those girls to go out and they left. It was the day of 'Id, and the Black people were playing with shields and spears; so either I requested the Prophet (p.b.u.h) or he asked me whether I would like to see the display. I replied in the affirmative. Then the Prophet (p.b.u.h) made me stand behind him and my cheek was touching his cheek and he was saying, "Carry on! O Bani Arfida," till I got tired. The Prophet (p.b.u.h) asked me, "Are you satisfied (Is that sufficient for you)?" I replied in the affirmative and he told me to leave.

Message: Salaam wa alaikom,

No doubt Music is Haraam and no doubt MOST of the scholars are agreed!

Music is one of the ‘Fahshaa’ or ‘Laghw’ about which Noble Qura’n strictly forbids. And also Quran says, do good deeds. So what is goodness in the music? If anyone says about the entertainment, music doesn’t relieve any inner or outer worries and grieves but only the remembrance of Allah is the remedy, which does so!

If someone questions, what is the badness in the music? The answer is that the music directs towards the evils. No one can stop listener of the light music to listen the other types of music. If the bud grows it then develops into a powerful branch of the tree and so on. So the Muslims must refrain to bow the seeds of evil and irrigate them.

In addition, music is used as the part of worship by some nonmuslims e.g. Hindus beat the drum; Christians use some other instrument and etc. Therefore the prophet sa also forbade us playing all the musical instruments even for the entertainment (I will present reference of the Hadith very soon). Here the Muslims must refrain again to promote the nonmuslim ways of life. They have no authority to islamise everything, which is not Islamic or every evil can’t be fitted into the framework of Islam.

If some Hadith permits the girls at some special occasion it doesn’t imply giving permission to all other muslims and apply it everywhere. Why didn’t prophet sa and his companions entertained themselves by the music? Is there any example if we want to hear music and apply the Hadith everywhere?

I again emphasise no doubt Music is Haraam and no doubt MOST of the scholars are agreed!

Sincerely,
Abinzain

Message: Why are you so hard headed? If music is haram, then do not listen to any hamd, naat, any duf, any beautiful recital of the Quran, any glorification of Allah's majesty, etc. Because this all also comes under the category of music.

If Allah subhana o taala has not made something haram, then who has the right to make it haram? Prove from a verse from the Quran what you are saying! Otherwise fear Allah for putting your own words into God's mouth.

According to YOUR logic ONLY that Music shud be Forbidden that FALLs in the Category of "Laghw and Faasha". Tell me that Does ALL type of Music is Really "Laghw and Faasha". Even a Common man's answer will be NEGATIVE & that's what we are TRYING to establish here that not ONLY in Music BUT In All Spheres of Life ONLY those things will be HARAAM that are WRONG or Can Lead us to Wrong things. Plz Try to think upon OUR saying Because otherwise YOU may be Asked by GOD on the Day of Judgment That HOW did you DARE to Declare My Creations as HARAAM of your OWN. Plz note that Only God Has the RIGHT to Declare any thing Haraam.

Prophetic Saying on Music

Manzoor ul Hassan/Tr. by Tariq Haashmi

Music was one of the favourite cultural traditions of the Arabs in the days of the Prophet Muhammad (sws). Music and musical instruments were frequently used in worship rituals. It was also employed in the expression of delight and sorrow. Music accompanied wars and festivals too. A study of the traditions ascribed to the Holy Prophet (sws) reveals that not only did he express his likeness for Music but he also encouraged others to play it on festive occasions. Some reliable narratives in this regard make it clear that the mother of the believers, ‘A’ishah (rta) listened to songs in the very presence of the Holy Prophet (sws). The Holy Prophet (sws) himself is reported to have encouraged people to use music on wedding ceremonies. On his migration from Makkah to Madinah, the women sang welcome songs on the Daff and the Holy Prophet (sws) expressed his approbation of this. At another occasion, a professional female singer and musician approached him and requested him to listen to her song. The Holy Prophet (sws) not only himself listened to her song but also took ‘A’ishah (rta) to listen to her. The mother of the believers leaned on the Holy Prophet’s (sws) shoulders and enjoyed the performance for a considerable time. During journeys, the Messenger of God showed his likeness for the Hida, a kind of desert song. He is also reported to have appointed a Hadi for his camels who was endowed with a very sweet sound. He also emphasized beating the Daff in order to announce Nikah. Various traditions have been recorded in the books of Hadith on these issues. A study of some of these traditions follows.

i. Music on the ‘Id Festivals

Narrates ‘A’ishah (rta): The Messenger (sws) of God came to my residence while two female singers were singing the songs of Bu‘ath.1 The Holy Prophet (sws) lay down and turned his face to the other side. Meanwhile Abu Bakr (rta) entered and [seeing the singers] rebuked me thus: ‘Satanic musical instruments in the presence of the Holy Prophet (sws)?’ On hearing this God’s Messenger (sws) turned towards him and said: ‘Let them [sing and rejoice]’. When Abu Bakr was engaged in some other business, I signaled to the girls [to go out] and they left. It was on the ‘Id day.2 (Bukhari, No: 907)

We can conclude from this narrative the following points:

· The Mother of the believers, ‘A’ishah (rta), was listening to songs on ‘Id day.

· The songs were being sung in the residence of the Holy Prophet (sws).
· A professional singer was performing.3
· The song was not a hymn to God; rather a relic of a war fought before the advent of Islam.
· The mother of the believers did not stop listening to the song even after the Holy Prophet had arrived.
· The Holy Prophet (sws) did not forbid her from listening to the song.
· He did not stop the female singers either.
· He himself was not attracted to the performance but he must have heard the song as he could hear Abu Bakr’s comments.
· Abu Bakr (rta) condemned the practice at first sight and declared that these were satanic instruments.
· When he tried to stop the singers and censure the listeners, the Holy Prophet (sws) stopped him from doing so.

The report evidently proves that the Holy Prophet (sws) allowed singing music during religious festivals. This is evidenced by the fact that Holy Prophet’s (sws) wife enjoyed singing and music. Although Abu Bakr (rta) tried to stop the function, the Holy Prophet (sws) did not interfere with it, and let the performers and the audience enjoy themselves. Therefore, in light of this evidence we can conclude that music can justifiably be considered allowable in Islam.

The following narrative also deals with the issue:

عن أم سلمة قالت دخلت علينا جارية لحسان بن ثابت يوم فطر ناشرة شعرها معها دف تغني فزجرتها أم سلمة فقال النبي دعيها يا أم سلمة فإن لكل قوم عيدا وهذا يوم عيدنا

Umm-i-Salamah narrates: A slave girl belonging to Hassan Ibn Thabit (rta) came to us on ‘Id al Fitr. Her hair was unkempt and she carried a tambourine and was singing [some song]. Umm-i-Salamah rebuked her. But the Holy Prophet (sws) said to her: ‘Ummi-i-Salamah, let her [sing and rejoice]. Certainly every nation has an ‘Id and this day is our ‘Id’. (Mu‘jam Al-Kabir, No: 558)

ii. Music on Wedding Ceremonies

Narrates Ibn ‘Abbas: ‘A’ishah (rta) arranged the marriage of a close Ansari girl. The Holy Prophet (sws) also came to attend the ceremony. He inquired from the people: ‘Have you sent forth the bride?’ ‘Yes’, they replied. ‘Did you send any singer with her?’ He asked. ‘A’ishah (rta) replied in the negative. The Holy Prophet (sws) then remarked: ‘The Ansar cherish singing. It would be better that you sent along with her a singer who would sing’4

‘We have come to you; we have joined you. Peace be upon us. Peace be upon you.’5 (Ibn Majah, No: 1900)

The narrative delineates the following points:

· The way the Holy Prophet (sws) inquired about singing and playing music on this occasion reveals that it was customary for the Arabs to send a singer with the bride when sent to join the bridegroom.
· The Holy Prophet (sws) was not pleased to hear that the custom was abandoned on that occasion.
· He encouraged people to adhere to the custom.
· He suggested some couplets to be recited on such occasions though he did not sing them.
· He referred to the characteristics of the Ansar and did not express his disapproval of the same.

The narrative proves that the Holy Prophet (sws) approved of singing and playing music on marriage ceremonies. Some other versions of the narrative reveal that the Prophet (sws) noticed that there was no singing or music being played in the house where the marriage ceremony was being conducted. He felt strange and inquired about the reason. Consider the following text of the narrative:

عن عائشة قالت كان في حجري جارية من الأنصار فزوجتها قالت فدخل علي رسول الله يوم عرسها فلم يسمع غناء ولا لعبا فقال يا عائشة هل غنيتم عليها أو لا تغنون عليها ثم قال ان هذا الحي من الأنصار يحبون الغناء

‘A’ishah (rta) reports: An Ansari girl lived under my guardianship and I arranged her marriage. The Holy Prophet (sws) came to my house on the day she was married and did not hear any songs or any other joyful activities. [Observing this] he asked of me: ‘Did you people sing to her or not?’ ‘This is the tribe of the Ansar who like singing,’ he added. (Ibn Hibban, No: 5875)

iii. Use of Music on Joyous Occasions

Ibn ‘A’ishah narrates: When the Holy Prophet (sws) came to Madinah, the women and the children started singing: ‘The Moon has risen upon us from the hillocks of Wida‘. We owe gratitude [to God] as long as those who call God continue doing so. O Prophet (sws) you have brought a religion that is worthy to be followed’.6

Narrates Anas Ibn Malik: [Having entered the city], the Holy Prophet (sws) passed through a certain part of the town. Suddenly some slave girls appeared singing on the Daff the following ditty: ‘We are the slave girls of Bani Najjar.7 How lucky! This day the Holy Prophet (sws) has come to be our neighbor’. At this the Holy Prophet (sws) remarked: ‘God knows that I love you people’8 (Ibn Majah, No: 1899)

These narratives deal with the Holy Prophet’s arrival in Madinah after his migration from Makkah. Their content can be summarized in the following points:

· The Holy Prophet’s arrival in Madinah was an extremely joyous occasion.
· People expressed their joy by singing joyous songs.
· Slave girls were also from among the singers.
· They had musical instruments to play with their songs.
· The Holy Prophet (sws) and the Companions (rta) heard these songs but they did not express their disapproval.
· The Holy Prophet (sws) expressed his love and kindness for singing women.

These and other similar narratives sufficiently prove that when the Holy Prophet (sws) reached Madinah after his migration from Makkah, he received a warm welcome. The city had a festive appearance. Every one was filled with joy on the Holy Prophet’s arrival. Women, slave girls, singing women and children expressed their joy by singing welcome songs and playing the Daff. The Holy Prophet (sws) appreciated this. Therefore, one cannot deny the fact that the Holy Prophet (sws) sanctioned celebrating joyous occasion by singing melodies using musical instruments.

iv. Use of Music during Travels:

Narrates Salama Ibn Al-Akwa‘: ‘We set off for Khaybar in the company of the Holy Prophet (sws) at night. A man from the group said to ‘Amir: ‘O ‘Amir, would not you let us hear your poetry?’ ‘Amir who was a Hida poet got down and started reciting for the people [the following verses]: ‘O God, were not it for your guidance, we could not have been able to offer the Salah and pay the Zakah. So please forgive our sins that [we have committed] and the ones we may commit in future. We are ready to offer our lives for your cause. Grant us perseverance when faced [with the enemy] and pour down your mercy upon us. [We are the people] who refuse to surrender when the enemy challenges us to fight. And [we leave them] to cry for help against us’.

The Holy Prophet asked: ‘Who is that signer?’ They replied: ‘‘Amir bin Al-Akwa‘’. ‘God bless him’, prayed the Holy Prophet (sws)9. (Bukhari, No: 3960)

We learn from the narrative that:

· The Companions were along with the Holy Prophet (sws) on his way to Khaybar.
· Some of the Companions requested ‘Amir (rta) to sing from his Hida (i.e. song sung primarily to drive camels, which correspond to their walk). He complied with the request and began his recitation with such a loud voice that the Holy Prophet (sws) could hear him.
· The Holy Prophet (sws) inquired about the singer approvingly.
· Since he had recited good verses the Holy Prophet (sws) prayed for him.

Hida is a form of the desert poetry. The verses in this kind of poetry are rhymed corresponding to the pace of the footsteps of the camels. Ancient Arab camel drivers would sing this kind of poetry while travelling through the desert. Though the primary purpose of this singing was to encourage the camels to walk speedily yet the camel drivers themselves enjoyed it a lot. Many Hadith narratives refer to this practice of the time and evidently prove that the Holy Prophet (sws) and his Companions would enjoy this kind of poetry.

According to other narratives on the same subject, the Holy Prophet (sws) had appointed Anjashah, who had a very pleasing voice, to serve as a Hadi (i.e. camel driver) during his travels in the desert. During one of the travels, the camels started to pace very quickly affected by the sweetness of his sound. The Holy Prophet (sws) stopped him lovingly from singing Hida. He asked the singer not to force the beasts to walk at a faster pace so that female riders do not fall down. ‘Anas Ibn Malik reports:

The Holy Prophet had a Had, Anjashah. He had a very sweet sound. [During one of his journeys] the Holy Prophet (sws) said to him: ‘Slow down, Anjashah, lest you should break the delicate goblets. Qatadah explained that the Prophet (sws) was referring to delicate women. (Bukhari, No: 5857)

According to the scholars Hida’ definitely is a type of singing. Dr. Jawwad Ali writes:

Hida is of the oldest type of singing in Arabia that was specifically used during travels and is still used in contemporary Bedouin society. Besides, since the Hida songs suit sorrowful situation, this type of singing was used in mourning etc. as well. The Holy Prophet (sws) got a Hida singer appointed for him called Al-Barra’ Ibn Malik Ibn Nadar Al-Ansari who would drive camels for male riders. Another Had of his was Anjashah who had a very melodious tone. He was a black slave of the Holy Prophet (sws) who was employed to serve as a Had for the camels of the wives of the Holy Prophet (sws). 10

He further writes:

Al-Hida’ actually is the singing used among the desert dwellers … this kind of singing corresponds with the tones cherished by the desert dwellers and also with their simple and natural mourning songs that please the nomadic tastes of these Bedouins. 11

Ibn Khaldun writes in his book, Muqaddamah, that the basic purpose of Hida was not only to please the caravan members but also to urge the camels to proceed faster.

This feeling of joy is even found in speechless animals not to mention humans. Therefore we see that the camels respond to the Hida of the riders, and the horses are affected by the whistles and shrill sounds. We already know that animals receive effects of the songs if they are rhythmical, and correspond to the rules governing the art of music.12

v. Musical Instruments

Narrates Rabi‘, daughter of Mu‘wwadh: On the occasion of my transfer to my husband’s home after marriage, the Holy Prophet (sws) came to visit us and sat down on my bed just as you [the next narrator] are sitting before me now. Some slave girls were beating the Daff and singing in lamentation of their forefathers who had been killed during the battle of Badr. Then one of the girls sang: ‘Among us is the Prophet (sws) who knows even what will happen in coming days’. At this, the Holy Prophet (sws) said: ‘Do not say this, but go on singing.13 (Bukhari, No: 3779)

We learn from the narrative that:

· The Holy Prophet (sws) attended a marriage ceremony where some slave girls were singing.
· Singing was not stopped on his arrival.
· The singers used the Daff with their singing.
· The Holy Prophet (sws) heard them [this is evident from the fact that he stopped them from uttering certain words.]
· He however ordered them to continue with what they were singing before.

This effectively proves that the Holy Prophet (sws) did not impose any restriction on using the Daff, a common musical instrument used in that society. Keeping in view the information we received through the above mentioned narratives we can conclude that Arabs of the times of the Holy Prophet (sws) would use musical instrument to accompany their singing on joyous occasions. This has been done in the presence of the Holy Prophet (sws) to which he did not object. Some other narratives even tell us that the Holy Prophet (sws) even ordered the people to use musical instruments at the occasion of marriage.

The Holy Prophet (sws) said: ‘the only thing that distinguishes the allowable act (i.e. Nikah) from the forbidden one (fornication) is the beat of the tambourine and open declaration of the Nikah.14 (Ibn Majah, No: 1896)

The Daff no doubt is an old musical instrument to be played by hand, which remained in use from ancient times. In this regard, Dr. Jawwad ‘Ali writes:

The Daff is one of the most well known primitive musical instruments. It is used to express joy and high spirit. Women also play it. The Arabs would commonly use it on their most joyous occasions. When the Holy Prophet (sws) reached Madinah he was welcomed with the singing of songs and playing of the Daff. Usually, the Arabs would use it on joyful ceremonies like weddings, and would sing songs along with it.15

The Bible also contains references to the Daff as a musical instrument at various occasions. One of the Urdu Bible dictionaries, Qamus Al-Kitab, defines the instrument thus:

It was a kind of narrow hoop musical instrument which was held in [one] hand and played [by striking it with the other.] It was used to create rhythm while singing and dancing. It would offer much cheerfulness in celebrations and processions.16

vi. Art of Music

Narrates Sa’ib Ibn Yazid: A woman came to the Holy Prophet (sws). He asked ‘A’ishah (rta): ‘Do you know her?’ ‘No, O Prophet (sws) of God’ she replied. ‘This is the female professional singer of such and such tribe. Do you want her to sing to you?’ So the woman sang for her. 17 (Bayhaqi, No: 8940)

We learn from the narrative:

· A woman connected with the art of music18 came to the Holy Prophet (sws).
· She expressed her desire to sing to ‘A’ishah (rta)
· The Holy Prophet (sws) did not express dislike for this nor did he rebuke her.
· He introduced her to ‘A’ishah (rta).
· With the permission from the Holy Prophet (sws), the singer sang to ‘A’ishah (rta).

The narrative evidences that the Holy Prophet (sws) did not consider singing evil in its nature. Had it been the case he would have hindered the woman from doing so or at least he would not have allow ‘A’ishah (rta) to listen to her song. Some other narratives tell us that such professional singers and dancers, both men and women, were common among the Arabs of that time, and the Holy Prophet (sws) did not deem it undesirable to enjoy their performance.

Consider the following narratives:

Narrates ‘A’ishah (rta): The Holy Prophet (sws) was present among us when suddenly we heard children creating noise. The Holy Prophet (sws) stood up. [We found out] that a black slave woman was dancing encircled by children. The Holy Prophet (sws) [called me] saying: ‘‘A’ishah (rta), come and watch’. I came [to him] placed my chin over the Prophet’s shoulders and watched through the space between his shoulders and head. The Holy Prophet (sws) asked many times: ‘Have you not got enough of it?’ In order to know how he cares for me I continued replying in the negative. Meanwhile ‘Umar (rta) came and the gathering disbursed [seeing him]. At this the Holy Prophet commented: ‘I see that the devils from among the Jinn and the humans have fled at ‘Umar arrival.’ 19 (Tirmidhi, No: 3691)

Abdullah Ibn Buridah narrates on the authority of his father: The Holy Prophet (sws) returned from some of his military expeditions. A black slave girl approached him and said: ‘I had vowed to beat the Daff before you if God brought you back unhurt’. The Holy Prophet replied: ‘If you have, then proceed’. She started beating the Daff. Meanwhile Abu Bakr (rta) came and she continued beating it. Later when ‘Umar (rta) came she covered her instrument under herself as soon as she saw him. At this the Holy Prophet (sws) commented: ‘‘Umar, even Satan fears you’. (Bayhaqi, No: 19888)

The overall situation depicted in the above narratives makes it clear that the word ‘Habshiyyah’ and ‘Jariyyah Sawda’u’ connote professional singer slave-girl. For it would not be possible for a common lady to perform before the general public.

The word ‘Qaynah’ in the above mentioned narrative from Sunan Al-Bayhaqi connotes a professional female singer. The context does not permit any other explanation. Besides, it is a known fact that in the Arabic language the word has been used as a term for a professional female singer. The author of Lisan Al-‘Arab writes, ‘and the word ‘Qaynah’ means female slave singer.’20

Black male and female slaves excelled in the art of dancing and music. Many narratives provide sufficient evidence that they exhibited their skill in the presence of the Holy Prophet (sws) at numerous occasions and he did not condemn it.

vii. Dance

Anas (rta) narrates: Black slaves were dancing in front of the Messenger (sws) of God and sang the following words: ‘Muhammad (sws) is a pious person’. The Holy Prophet (sws) [did not understand their utterances] and asked what they were saying. The people replied: ‘they say that Muhammad (sws) is a pious person’. (Ahmad, No: 12562)

We learn from the narrative that:

· Some black slaves were dancing in the presence of the Holy Prophet (sws).
· They were singing the praise of the Holy Prophet (sws).
· The Holy Prophet (sws) did not stop them from doing so.
· He was interested in their performance. This is revealed by his question about their utterances.

The Hadith literature contains enough evidence to the fact that professional dancers from among the Abyssinian slaves used to perform before the Arabs. The nobles of Arabia would not consider enjoying such performances as undesirable. Therefore they would invite such artists to perform on their festive occasions. Dr Jawwad ‘Ali writes:

The Abyssinians were famous for their love of dancing. The people of Makkah and of other territories of Hijaz would call upon them to perform their special dances and sing songs whenever they would hold joyous ceremonies like marriage, circumcision and other similar festive occasions.21

Many Hadith narratives show that ‘A’ishah (rta) enjoyed the dancing feast of the Abyssinian slaves along with the Holy Prophet (sws).

Narrates ‘A’ishah (rta): Once on an ‘Id day the Abyssinian slaves came and started dancing in the mosque. The Holy Prophet (sws) called me. I placed my head on the Holy Prophet’s shoulder and started watching their performance. [The Holy Prophet did not stop me] until I myself got tired of watching them and turned away. (Muslim, No: 892)

viii. The Prophet’s Praise for a Melodious Voice

Narrates Abu Musa: The Holy Prophet (sws) [heard him recite the Holy Qur’an] and commented: ‘O Abu Musa, you have been given one of the musical wind-instruments of the nation of David’.

The narrative tells us:

· The Holy Prophet (sws) liked reciting the Qur’an in sweet sound.
· He rendered it analogous to using musical instruments.
· He appreciated the musical instruments used by people of David (sws).

This markedly shows that the Holy Prophet (sws) liked melodious utterances. The words of the narrative shows that the reason the Holy Prophet (sws) praised Abu Musa’s recitation was the sweetness of his voice. Obviously, this sweetness of sound should always be considered a desirable thing; not only this sweetness will be enjoyed while reciting the Holy Qur’an but also other poetry, for example, poetical compositions in praise of God and exalting Him and in expressing other good subjects or poetry. In all these things, a beautiful voice should be equally considered a virtue. The art of music and singing is nothing but rhythmical melodious themes. There is no doubt that the principles of reciting the Qur’an beautifully are different from the ones used in common musical notes. However, this is equally true that the treble and bass and beauty and delicacy of utterance are elements common in the Qur’anic recitation and other types of singing. Seen in this perspective, both arts have a common trait of some sort.

Furthermore, the narrative approves of the musical instruments of David (sws). Thus the Holy Prophet (sws) recognized Biblical accounts regarding David (sws) and his followers about their use of music and musical instruments in singing the praises of God. That is the reason the great exegetes of the Qur’an have recorded this Hadith narrative in connection with the Qur’anic verses dealing with David’s praises of God. While commenting on verse 79 of Surah Anbiya, the celebrated commentator of the Qur’an, Ibn Kathir writes:

And this was because of his reciting the Psalms in a melodious voice. When he would sing it the birds would stop in the air and sang in response to David; so did the mountains. It is for this reason that when the Holy Prophet (sws) passed Abu Musa Ash‘ari (rta), when he was offering his night prayer, he stopped and listened to his recitation for he had a very beautiful voice. The Holy Prophet (sws) said: ‘Indeed he (Abu Musa) has been bestowed one of the musical instruments of the people of David (sws)’. Hearing this, Abu Musa said: ‘Had I known that he [the Holy Prophet] was listening, I would have pleased him more’. Abu ‘Uthman Nahdi says that he did not find any drum, flute or a reed sound more pleasing than the voice of Abu Musa.22

Therefore it may safely be concluded that the Holy Prophet (sws) believed in the fact that David (sws) had a melodious voice.

Home

1. War fought between the two tribes of the Ansar, namely Aws and Khazraj, before the advent of Islam.
2. This Hadith is Sahih (authentic).
3. The word ‘Jariyah’ used in the narrative is usually taken to mean young girls. Although the word connotes young girls in certain contexts but there is little room to accept it as such. In this context, the word connotes a slave woman who is a professional singer and well known for her profession. This is evidently proved by the context in which the word is used here, and by the fact that another version of the same narrative has the word ‘Qaynah’ ( i.e. a professional female singer) has been used instead of Jariyah. The text of the narrative follows:

عن عائشة أن أبا بكر دخل عليها والنبي عندها يوم فطر أو أضحى وعندها قينتان تغنيان بما تقاذفت الأنصار يوم بعاث فقال أبو بكر مزمار الشيطان مرتين فقال النبي دعهما يا أبا بكر إن لكل قوم عيدا وإن عيدنا هذا اليوم

‘A’ishah (rta) narrates that once Abu Bakr (rta) came to her on the day of ‘Id Al-Fitr or ‘Id Al-Adha in the presence of the Prophet (sws). There were two female singers with her, singing the songs which the Ansar had sung on the day of Bu‘ath. Abu Bakr remarked twice: the ‘Why these satanic instruments?’ The Prophet heard him and said to him: ‘Let them sing. Every nation has an ‘Id and this day is our ‘Id’. (Bukhari, No: 3716)
4. In Bukhari, the narrative has been worded thus:

عن عائشة أنها زفت امرأة إلى رجل من الأنصار فقال نبي الله صلى الله عليه و سلم يا عائشة ما كان معكم لهو فإن الأنصار يعجبهم اللهو

‘A’ishah (rta) reported that once she married a woman to an Ansari man. The Prophet (sws) said: ‘O ‘A’ishah, what is it that there is no singing and playing whereas the Ansar take delight in this’. (No: 4867)

7. It would not be correct to translate the word ‘Jawari’ as young girls. Some other version of the narrative has the word ‘Qaynat’ (a woman who is a professional singer) instead of ‘Jawari’.

Anas Ibn Malik narrates that when the Prophet (sws) passed by a clan of Bani Najjar, he noticed some slave girls were singing on Daff: ‘We are the singers of Bani Najjar. We are lucky enough to have the Prophet (sws) as our neighbour today’. Then the Prophet (sws) said: ‘God knows that my heart feels affection for you people’. (Al-Mu‘jam Al-Saghir, No: 78)

14. Secret marriage contract is not considered valid in the Islamic Shari‘ah. Thus open declaration of the marriage is one of the basic requirements for the validity of a Nikah. That is why the Prophet (sws) rendered it desirable to beat the Daff on this occasion during his time. Consider the following narrative:

عن علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه أن رسول الله مر هو وأصحابه ببني زريق فسمعوا غناء ولعبا فقال ما هذا قالوا نكاح فلان يا رسول الله قال كمل دينه هذا النكاح لا السفاح ولا نكاح السر حتى يسمع دف أو يرى دخان قال حسين وحدثني عمرو بن يحيى المازني أن رسول الله كان يكره نكاح السر حتى يضرب بالدف

‘Ali (rta) narrates: ‘Once the Holy Prophet (sws) and his Companions passed the tribe of Bani Zariq. He heard singing sounds and music. ‘What is this?’ he inquired. People replied: ‘Messenger of God, the Nikah of such and such [person is being conducted]’. ‘His religiosity now reaches the zenith’ said the Prophet (sws). ‘This is the prescribed way of Nikah. Neither adultery nor secret marriage is allowed until one hears the sound of the Daff or watches the smoke rising. Husayn said: ‘I was also informed by ‘Amr Ibn Yahya Al-Mazani that the Prophet would disapprove of secret marriage [and would not accept it] until the Daff was played’. (Bayhaqi, No: 14477)
The Prophet (sws) held it necessary for the Arabs of his time to use the Daff to announce the wedding considering the prevailing custom and cultural traditions of the Arabs of that time. In current times, the purpose can be met through any other available means.

17. This Hadith is Sahih (i.e. authentic).
18. Here the word Qaynah has been used which stands for a professional female singer.
19. Some people present this narrative to prove that the art of music is evil in nature. They base their argument on the prophetic saying, ‘I see that Satan from among the Jinn and the humans have fled when ‘Umar arrived’. They claim that the Prophet (sws) related music with Satan and thus expressed his dislike for it. We understand that the sentence is only expressive of sarcasm, which he used to express the harshness of ‘Umar’s disposition. If the words are taken in their literal meaning then one wonders what explanation is to be given for the presence of the Prophet (sws), ‘A‘ishah (rta) and Abu Bakr (rta).
20. This is the well acknowledged meaning of the word. The word has been used in this implication before and after the advent of Islam. Imra’ Al-Qays says:

(No worry if I have grown sorrowful. How many delicate singing slave girls did I employ on playing a Kiran. They had such musical instruments in their hands which on being stirred by the hands gave heavy sound that spread through the whole band of troops.)

Music can bring you closer to remmembrance of Allah, how dare you call such a music haram?! Have you no fear of Allah declaring something haram that Allah has not made haram? If you are truthful, then bring your proof!

As for your other stupid illogical argument that music is haram because it is the way of the non-Muslims, then by that logic driving cars, flying planes, making computers is also haram! What a moron!

Message: Evidence of prohibition in the Qur’aan and Sunnah:

Allaah says in Soorat Luqmaan (interpretation of the meaning):
“And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing) to mislead (men) from the path of Allaah…” [Luqmaan 31:6]
The scholar of the ummah, Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: this means singing. Mujaahid (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: this means playing the drum (tabl). (Tafseer al-Tabari, 21/40).
Al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: this aayah was revealed concerning singing and musical instruments (lit. woodwind instruments). (Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 3/451).
Al-Sa’di (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: this includes all manner of haraam speech, all idle talk and falsehood, and all nonsense that encourages kufr and disobedience; the words of those who say things to refute the truth and argue in support of falsehood to defeat the truth; and backbiting, slander, lies, insults and curses; the singing and musical instruments of the Shaytaan; and musical instruments which are of no spiritual or worldly benefit. (Tafseer al-Sa’di, 6/150)
Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: The interpretation of the Sahaabah and Taabi’in, that ‘idle talk’ refers to singing, is sufficient. This was reported with saheeh isnaads from Ibn ‘Abbaas and Ibn Mas’ood. Abu’l-Sahbaa’ said: I asked Ibn Mas’ood about the aayah (interpretation of the meaning), ‘“And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks’ [Luqmaan 31:6]. He said: By Allaah, besides Whom there is no other god, this means singing – and he repeated it three times. It was also reported with a saheeh isnaad from Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with them both) that this means singing. There is no contradiction between the interpretation of “idle talk” as meaning singing and the interpretation of it as meaning stories of the Persians and their kings, and the kings of the Romans, and so on, such as al-Nadr ibn al-Haarith used to tell to the people of Makkah to distract them from the Qur’aan. Both of them are idle talk. Hence Ibn ‘Abbaas said: “Idle talk” is falsehood and singing. Some of the Sahaabah said one and some said the other, and some said both. Singing is worse and more harmful than stories of kings, because it leads to zinaa and makes hypocrisy grow (in the heart); it is the trap of the Shaytaan, and it clouds the mind. The way in which it blocks people from the Qur’aan is worse than the way in which other kinds of false talk block them, because people are naturally inclined towards it and tend to want to listen to it. The aayaat condemn replacing the Qur’aan with idle talk in order to mislead (men) from the path of Allaah without knowledge and taking it as a joke, because when an aayah of the Qur’aan is recited to such a person, he turns his back as if he heard them not, as if there were deafness in his ear. If he hears anything of it, he makes fun of it. All of this happens only in the case of the people who are most stubbornly kaafirs and if some of it happens to singers and those who listen to them, they both have a share of this blame. (Ighaathat al-Lahfaan, 1/258-259).
Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“[Allaah said to Iblees:] And befool them gradually those whom you can among them with your voice (i.e. songs, music, and any other call for Allaah’s disobedience)…” [al-Israa’ 17:64]
It was narrated that Mujaahid (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: “And befool them gradually those whom you can among them with your voice” – his voice [the voice of Iblees/Shaytaan] is singing and falsehood. Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: This idaafah [possessive or genitive construction, i.e., your voice] serves to make the meaning specific, as with the phrases [translated as] “your cavalry” and “your infantry” [later in the same aayah]. Everyone who speaks in any way that is not obedient to Allaah, everyone who blows into a flute or other woodwind instrument, or who plays any haraam kind of drum, this is the voice of the Shaytaan. Everyone who walks to commit some act of disobedience towards Allaah is part of his [the Shaytaan’s] infantry, and anyone who rides to commit sin is part of his cavalry. This is the view of the Salaf, as Ibn ‘Abi Haatim narrated from Ibn ‘Abbaas: his infantry is everyone who walks to disobey Allaah. (Ighaathat al-Lahfaan).
Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Do you then wonder at this recitation (the Qur’aan)?
And you laugh at it and weep not,
Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing)”
[al-Najm 53:59-61]

‘Ikrimah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: it was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbaas that al-sumood [verbal noun from saamidoon, translated here as “Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing)”] means “singing”, in the dialect of Himyar; it might be said “Ismidi lanaa” [‘sing for us’ – from the same root as saamidoon/sumood] meaning “ghaniy” [sing]. And he said (may Allaah have mercy on him): When they [the kuffaar] heard the Qur’aan, they would sing, then this aayah was revealed.
Ibn Katheer (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning) “Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing)” – Sufyaan al-Thawri said, narrating from his father from Ibn ‘Abbaas: (this means) singing. This is Yemeni (dialect): ismad lana means ghan lana [sing to us]. This was also the view of ‘Ikrimah. (Tafseer Ibn Katheer).
It was reported from Abu Umaamah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Do not sell singing slave women, do not buy them and do not teach them. There is nothing good in this trade, and their price is haraam. Concerning such things as this the aayah was revealed (interpretation of the meaning): ‘And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing) to mislead (men) from the path of Allaah…’ [Luqmaan 31:6].” (Hasan hadeeth)
The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“Among my ummah there will certainly be people who permit zinaa, silk, alcohol and musical instruments…” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari ta’leeqan, no. 5590; narrated as mawsool by al-Tabaraani and al-Bayhaqi. See al-Silsilah al-Saheehah by al-Albaani, 91).
Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: This is a saheeh hadeeth narrated by al-Bukhaari in his Saheeh, where he quoted it as evidence and stated that it is mu’allaq and majzoom. He said: Chapter on what was narrated concerning those who permit alcohol and call it by another name.
This hadeeth indicates in two ways that musical instruments and enjoyment of listening to music are haraam. The first is the fact that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “[they] permit” which clearly indicates that the things mentioned, including musical instruments, are haraam according to sharee’ah, but those people will permit them. The second is the fact that musical instruments are mentioned alongside things which are definitely known to be haraam, i.e., zinaa and alcohol: if they (musical instruments) were not haraam, why would they be mentioned alongside these things? (adapted from al-Silsilah al-Saheehah by al-Albaani, 1/140-141)

Music is Haraam
References within the context of the Holy Qur`aan along with the Hadith of the Prophet confirm that music is haraam.
Interpreters of the Qur`aan have defined the term `lahwal hadith` which is mentioned in the Qur`aan as:
1) Singing and listening to songs.
2) Purchasing of male and female singers.
3) Purchase of instruments of fun and amusement.
When Sayyidana Abdullah Ibne Mas`ood , a very close companion of our Prophetwas asked about the meaning of the term `lahwal hadith`, he replied
“I swear by Him besides whom there is no other God,that it refers to ghina(singing ).”
This statement, he repeated three times. This view is unanimously supported by the four Khalifas, the eminent Sahabaah, Tabi`een, the four Imaams and other reliable Islaamic scholars and authorities.
One hadith from the Bukhari Shareef, the most authentic Book of Hadith, further confirms unlawfulness of music and singing :

`There will be people of my Ummah who will seek to make lawful; fornication, wine-drinking and the use of ma`aazif ( musical instruments ).`

Detailed analysis of the arabic word `ma`aazif ` shows that it refers to musical instruments, the sounds of those musical instruments and singing with the accompaniment of instruments.
Closer analysis of the wordings of the Hadith establishes the prohibition of music. Firstly, the words `seek to make lawful ` shows that music is not permissible, as logically one can only seek to make lawful that which is not allowed. Secondly, if music was not prohibited, then it would not have been brought within the same context as fornication and wine-drinking.

Hadith narrated by Hadhrat Abdullah Ibn Mas'ood (R.A.) when he inquired from Rasulallah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wassallam) about the Signs of Qiyamah. And one of the sign is :

-\"Music and musical instruments will be found in every home\"

Sahih Al-Bukhari Volume 7, Book 69, hadith #494v

Narrated Abu 'Amir (raa) or Abu Malik Al-Ash'ari (raa) claimed that he heard the Prophet (SAW) saying,
"From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks, and the use of musical instruments [ma'aazif] as lawful. And (from them), there will be some who will stay near the side of a mountain, and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, 'Return to us tomorrow.' Allah will destroy them during the night and will let the mountain fall on them, and Allah will transform the rest of them into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Resurrection."

Message: There are different views and schools of Islam. There is no need to argue on this matter. If they think ALL music and singing is haram, even that of glorification of Allah's names and beautiful verses, then let them think so. If we think only bad musis is haram and good music is ok, then that is another opinion. Islam does not allow one school to impose its thoughts over the other. You are free to practice Islam as you think is correct, and we are free to practice as we think is correct. At the end, Allah will judge us for what we used to do. May Allah guide us all to the right path. Peace be with you, and peace be with us. Forgive me those members whom my remarks offended.

Message: MUSIC IS HARAAM!!!!!

Music was not used by the prophet sa and the companions in whole of their lives because it was Haraam, is Haraam and will be Harram till the last day. In Quran it is Haraam and forbidden as ‘Laghw’ and ‘Fahshaa’.

Condemning your stupid logic it is said that the things like cars, planes and computers etc are our needs though were not present at the times of the prophet sa while the music was present those time but still not used by them who, unlike you, spread Islam.

Tell me,
IS MUSIC OUR NEED LIKE CARS, PLANES, AND COMPUTERS ETC?
IF YOU CONSIDER OUR NEEDS to relieve the worries etc, YOU ARE WRONG. Only the remembrance of Allah makes you happy.
So don’t promote the unislamic things!
N O T E
MUSIC BEING PRESENT THOSE TIMES BUT STILL NOT USED BY THE PROPHET SA AND THE COMPANIONS IN WHOLE OF THEIR LIVES IS THE STRONGEST EVIDENCE OF IT BEING HARA’M.
SOME HADEES ARE ONLY TIME SPECIFIC DUE TO SOME REASONS OTHERWISE A SINGLE EXAMPLE OF USAGE OF MUSIC BY THE BY THE PROPHET SA AND THE COMPANIONS MAY BE SUFFICIENT.
IF ANY BODY SAYS ABOUT THE QURANIC REFERENCE, PROPHET SA IS THE REFERENCE [33: 21], IF YOU BELIEVE IN QURA’N.
SO,
MUSIC IS HARA’M, MUSIC IS HARA’M, MUSIC IS HARA’M……

Message: If what you are saying is true, then why did the prophet (s.a.w.) allow hazrat Aisha (r.t.a.) to enjoy the African dancers and their musical instruments?

It shows either you are a liar or the shaih bukhari hadith is a lie. Which one is it?

And lagh and fahshai may be haram, but music is of many kinds. Certainly most of the music today is associated with lagh and fahshai, but music that glorifies Allah, how dare you call that music that glorifies Allah and brings you closer to Allah's remmembrance, how dare you call it haram?

You said >>> Music cannot relieve the worries etc, YOU ARE WELL WRONG. Only the remembrance of Allah makes you happy. <<<

That is a big lie that music cannot relieve worries.

Armies, even Muslim armies, used the drum-beat music and singing to instil valor, to moralize the army and to demoralize the enemy, to get the worry of enemy off their minds.

Upon the prophet's arriving in Medina after the migration from Mecca, the people rejoiced and sang and danced in the streets. The singing and dancing was an expression of joy, an outlet for them.

If it were up to mullahs and fundamentalists, the human race would be living a dull and boring life under an iron curtain of fear. They try to take out the little bit of happiness from this life that the poor and oppressed people have. What you people end up doing then is creating a hatred for Islam.

Don't you see what the fundamentalists did in Afghanistan, and are doing in Iran. The young people there begin to hate Islam. But the reverse is true for Muslim societies where there is more freedom. People actually start loving Islam because it is so lenient. Islam asks us to follow the middle way. So why are you so harsh and hard headed?

If we analyse deeply, who is more selfish- one who wants to live a life with limited needs or one who wants to live a life with luxuries. It is upto you to put up your mind and have the answer from your self.

How much are the selfish people respected in the society and with Allah?

It is very sad that not only nonmuslim influenced so much by the western media but also our Muslim brothers. How much Taliban have to work hard and how many they sacrifices their life in the straggle to making peace there. They were cleaning the mess, which was due the downfall of Russia, and US were equally responsible for this mess. What you heard there is mostly lie.

With the limited resources they managed to establish peace in most of Afghanistan.Unless we will not through the guggle of western media and try to see the actual ground realities, we will far away from the truth.

US attacked on the Araq with the blame that they are having WMD.Now hole world knows that there is no such thing exist in Araq. This has open eyes of the hole world, some of our brothers still sleeping. They still believe in the stories of western media.

Brother, we need to take our head out of the sand and see what is happening in our name, in the name of our religion. Taliban people did many good things, but they also had a negative side. And it is not the western media, it is our own media that can tell you horrific stories of oppression, mass killings, etc. Go through Urdu newspapers, talk to the people who lived under the fundamentalist regime.

Ask yourself, Allah gave them kingdom of the land because they were good, they got rid of the infidels, then why did Allah take away the kingdom from them? Did they do something wrong afterwards?

47.38 Behold, ye are those invited to spend (of your substance) in the Way of Allah: But among you are some that are niggardly. But any who are niggardly are so at the expense of their own souls. But Allah is free of all wants, and it is ye that are needy. If ye turn back (from the Path), He will substitute in your stead another people; then they would not be like you!

Are we being substituted by another people who are better than us? Have we turned our back from the way of Allah?

Brother, do you still believe that Muslims did not blow up the buildings on 9-11, and Muslims did not blow up people in London? Do you believe in conspiracy theories even when Muslims have taken responsibility for these actions? YOu see not what is happening in the name of our religion?

The fundamentalists have a twisted wicked logic - if you die in their way, either you were kafir and will go to hell, or you are a martyr if you were innocent. They say the innocent people they kill are all martyrs, so they keep killing inncocent children, women and anyone in their way.

Sahih Bukhari Volume 2, Book 17, Number 146:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, "The Hour (Last Day) will not be established until (religious) knowledge will be taken away (by the death of religious learned men), earthquakes will be very frequent, time will pass quickly, afflictions will appear, murders will increase and money will overflow amongst you."

YOu see the knowledge is being taken away, the ones in charge are ignorant mullah fundamentalists who know only to oppress women, to twist the religion to justify their mantra, some even molest young boys who are sent to become huffaz (read Pakistani newspapers for these stories).

Message: Here is another verse to think about:

024.055 Allah has promised, to those among you who believe and work righteous deeds, that He will, of a surety, grant them in the land, inheritance (of power), as He granted it to those before them; that He will establish in authority their religion - the one which He has chosen for them; and that He will change (their state), after the fear in which they (lived), to one of security and peace: 'They will worship Me (alone) and not associate aught with Me. 'If any do reject Faith after this, they are rebellious and wicked.

Now take the example of Muslim regimes in the world. Many came to power because they were good and ordered good. They achieved security and peace after being insecure and oppressed. This was a blessing of Allah. But what happened after these regimes got Allah's blessings.

We should ask ourselves what we did wrong so it doesn't happen again.

Actually you are the one who first mixed singing/music, drinking wine with glorification of Allah (swt). You are the one who declared all kinds of music haram, even that which glorifies Allah. I have been trying to explain to you that mucis that glorifies Allah cannot be haram, but you are stubborn.

You said >>> The person Oosman from USA (as shown only) has become mad just for his personal benefits.

>>> If he get less money of singing without music, may be helped as a miskeen about which Noble Quran commands us to help. I hope the muslims community will help him the needy.

Answer: There is no personal benefit for me, I am not a singer, nor do I like to listen to music or singing. To me it is a waste of time. But it is not haram to waste your time - that is my point. You should stop calling something haram which is allowed, because it is a big sin to call something haram that is not! If someone wants to waste their time, Allah has allowed it, it is not haram. It is of no benefit indeed, but it is not haram.

>>> Music is haram.

Where does the holy Quran say music is haram? YOu have not produced one verse where Allah said that! Why did Allah never use the word 'music' in any verse to say it is haram? Was it not easy for Allah to tell us music is haram? He never did that! So stop putting your own words in Allah's commands!

>>> It is better for anyone to leave Islam (if muslim) rather than to try making it impure and impose h

Exactly true, that is why you should stop polluting Islam with your false beliefs and stick to what Allah said.

Message: Salam,

The problem with some muslims nowadays is that they think that they know everything about Islam and whoever does not agree with their interpretation is called as Kaafir or apostate.

I know many muslims who still believe that the massacre that these terrorists did in Sep 11 was done by Jews!!!. They give a blind eye to all the clear evidences and believe in invented story that tries to discredit the evidences. Many muslims would deny even the London bombing was done by people who professed muslim faith!!. These terrorists are brainwashed and they become bigoted. They believe that they are matyrs if they kill non-muslims even if they are innocent civilians. But God says whoever kills an innocent soul will abide in Hell forever even if they proclaim to be muslims.[25:69].Let us stop this insanity and save our youth from dangerous ideologies. Please note that I also condemn massacre of muslims done by America and Western countries under false pretext.

Message: Thank you for these links, they are very informative. May Allah reward you. I would like to copy from these links this warning:

Warning against playing with the word “haram”

To conclude, we address the respectful scholars who tackle the word “haram” easily and set it free in their writings and fatwas that they should observe that Allah is watching over them in all that they say or do. They should also know that this word “haram” is very dangerous. It means that Allah’s Punishment is due on a certain act or saying, and should not be based upon guessing, whims, weak Hadiths, not even through an old book. It has to be supported by a clear, well-established text or valid consensus. If these last two are not found, then we revert the given act or saying to the original rule: "permissibility governing things". We do have a good example to follow from one of our earlier pious scholars. Imam Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: “It was not the habit of those who preceded us, the early pious Muslims, who set good example for the following generations, to say, 'This is halal, and this is haram. But, they would say, ‘I hate such-and-such, and maintain such-and-such, but as for halal and haram, this is what may be called inventing lies concerning Allah. Did not you hear Allah’s Statement that reads, 'Say: Have you considered what provision Allah has sent down for you, how you have made of it lawful and unlawful? Say: Has Allah permitted you, or do you invent a lie concerning Allah?” (Yunus: 59) For, the halal is what Allah and His Messenger made lawful, and the haram is what Allah and His Messenger made unlawful.

Message: Actually what Muslims do these days (including my self), we try to search things from Quran and Sunnah which suit to our personnel disire. We must be looking from Quran and Sunnah what these both desire us to do on a certain issue and once we know it, we should try to implement it in our life even if it is not suit to our personnel desire. We can bring our point of view to others but like brother oosman said (Islam does not allow one school to impose its thoughts over the other). We are mature enough to understand this.I copy a few from a fatwa for detail info. the link is there underneath.

Music and Singing: A Detailed Fatwa

Answered by Mufti Muhammad ibn Adam al-Kawthari, Leicester (UK)

Physical Effect of Music

Experiments carried out by doctors and researchers confirm that music is such that it does not only affect the brain, but each and every organ of the body. There is a close relationship between music and bodily movements.

It is also proved that music affects one’s emotions, increases arousal in terms of alertness and excitement and also leads to various psychological changes in the person. In a psychological experiment, it was found that listening to moderate type of music increased one’s normal heart beat, whilst listening to rock music the heart beat increased even further, yet people claim that music has no effect.

In conclusion, music and the instruments used for singing are a cause for arousing the sexual desire of an individual. It could lead a person to adultery and fornication. Therefore, Islam takes the preventive measure rather than suffers the consequences. This is also one of the principles of Islamic Jurisprudence, namely ‘blocking the means’ (sadd al-dhara'i). This is based on the idea of preventing an evil before it actually materializes, and is taken from the heart of the guidance of the Qur’an and Sunnah that, “Preventing harm is given precedence even to achieving possible benefits.”

Message: The role of music entertainment seems to be depending upon the way of the auditory and the visual signals, via the refractory media of our eye and the vibratory eardrums of our ears, which penetrate our minds to influence its effectors.

Perhaps the majority may not agree with me, to know that it is no exaggeration if I say music may bring us more near God. As I said earlier, “The role of music …………influence its effectors”, music induces the psychological effects causing meditativeness in which if anyone concentrate anywhere remains static in that condition. Similarly if someone concentrates towards God, remains static in the condition and this explains the role of Qawali, which some group of Sufis listen eagerly. Remember; I am saying especially about those Qawali, which are not associated with the polytheistic words and thoughts.

Regarding my views on music, I think we ourselves are the best judges. All those musics, which do not hurt our minds or those of the others in our vicinities, are quiet harmless in every aspect.

Wassalam with the saying of God:

Until when they come to it, their ears and their eyes and their skins shall bear witness against them as to what they did (41: 20). And that was your (evil) thought, which you entertained about your Lord that has tumbled you down into perdition, so are you become of the lost ones (41: 23).

bt that doesnt jst limit itself 2 music
that comes under zeena of the ears

My understanding of Islam(wich obviously is different from yours)that it is an enlightened faith, tolerant and respecter of other faiths-I dont know if you ever bother with the Quran: There is a clear statement that there is no compulsion in religion and that for me sums up how tolerant Islam is.
You unfortunately rant and are abusive to any notion that might disagree with your understanding.

Message: Dear Brothers and sisters in Islam
Assalam o Alaikum !
I came across this discussion and instead of arguing, we need to stick what Quran and Sahih Hadeeth has quoted. Also we need to know the one exception as well. These days Music is a combination of lyrics, rhythm and beats generated by musical instruments. Prophet PBUH has made Haram all the musical instruments which use "wind" and "strings" and we all know that not a single instrument on this face of Earth is played without "wind" or "strings'. e.g Guitar, Piano etc. Duff is the only instrument, which does not use wind or strings as it is a one-sided drum that does not utilize wind or string. This also reconciles with Prophet's hadeeth.

We know from Islamic history that when Prophet Muhammad PBUH entered Madina for first time after migrating from Makka, the small girls of Madinah sang some lyrics which included only "Duff". Prophet PBUH was sent to humanity to do "Amar bil Ma'roof Wa Nahee A'nil Munkir" (To spread good deeds and to refrain people from Evil/Falsehood'. It has never happened in whole life of Prophet SAW that if a falsehood was spreading, he has not stopped it. therefore, he should have forbidden the Madina small girls to stop that kind of act that but he did not. This clearly states that that "Duff" is not haram however it is not Halal completely either as it should not be made a habbit in everyday life which mostly muslims do these days unfortunately. Also it can be easily concluded that it was sung by kids (small girls) and not the elders. It also can be easily concluded that that "Duff" was not forbidden by Prophet SAW on this big celebration, an event of migration from Makka to Madinah, a joyouous occassion for muslims in Madinah hence we can use DUFF ONLY (and not any other kind of music) when there is some religious celebration or occasion as per proved by this act keeping in view the Islamic limits/constraints of Hijaab for women and men.

Proofs from the Qur’an:
(1) Allah Taala mentions
((From amongst men there are those who purchase ‘lahw al hadith’ without knowledge, to mislead from the Path of Allah and they ridicule it. For them there is a humiliating punishment)). (Luqmân: 6)
The following great Commentators state that ‘lahw al hadith’ in the above verse refers to music….
a) Abdullah ibn Mas‘ûd radiyallâhu ‘anhu
b) Jâbir ibn ‘Abdillah radiyallâhu ‘anhu
c) Abdullâh ibn ‘Abbâs radiyallâhu ‘anhu
d) Hasan al-Basrî rahimahu Allah

m) Habeeb rahimahu Allah
n) Makhûl. rahimahu Allah
o) Abd al Kareem rahimahu Allah
p) Ibn Zakhr rahimahu Allah
q) Ataa al Khuraasaani rahimahu Allah
The two greatest commentators of this Ummah, Abdullah bin Masood and Abdullah bin Abbaas (radiyallâhu ‘anhuma), used to take an oath and say that this verse refers to music.
[Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 5/132, Al Mustadrak lil Hakim 2/211, Sunan al kubra lil Bayhaqi 10/223, Ad Durr al manthoor 8/76, Al Hawi al Kabeer 17/388, An Nukat wal uyoon 3/332, Tafseer Ibn Katheer 6/330, Tafseer al Qurtubi 14/52, Tafseer al Baghwi 6/283, Tafseer al lubaab libni Adil 13/10, Tafseer al Khaazin 5/145, Tafseer at Tabari 20/127, Zad al maser 5/105, Ma’arif al Quraan 7/28, Dhamm al malahi 5-6, Ahsan al fatawa 8/380]
(2) In Surah Bani Israeel, Allah Ta’ala mentioned to the devil
((And gradually befool those who you can from them with your voice (songs, music etc)….) (Bani Israeel 64)
The following illustrious commentators opined that ‘…your voice’ in the above mentioned verse refers to music…
a) Mujahid rahimahu Allah
b) Dhahaak rahimahu Allah
c) An Nasafi rahimahu Allah
d) At Tabri rahimahu Allah
e) As Suyuti rahimahu Allah

(3) The third verse which proves the impermissibility of music is the concluding verses of Surah Furqan where Allah has enumerated that one of the outstanding qualities of His slaves is that they distance themselves from music.

((And they are those who do not witness ‘Zoor’, and when they pass by futile activities, they pass in a dignified way)) (Furqan 72)
The following illustrious Commentators are of the opinion that ‘Zoor’ means music…
a) Mujahid rahimahu Allah
b) Imam Abu Hanifa rahimahu Allah
c) Abu Jafar rahimahu Allah
d) Muhammad bin Hanafia rahimahu Allah
e) Makhool rahimahu Allah

(4) Allah rebukes those who listen to music in the following verses
((Are you astonished at this recitation (the Quran)? And you laugh and do not cry, (Wasting your time) in vanities (music). So fall in prostration to Allah and worship him)) (An Najm 59-62)
The following distinguished commentators suggest that ‘vanities’ refers to music…..
a) Ibn Abbaas radiyallâhu ‘anhu
b) Abu Ubaidah radiyallâhu ‘anhu
c) Ikrimah rahimahu Allah
d) Mujahid rahimahu Allah
e) Baydhawi rahimahu Allah

(5) Another verse which could be cited is the following…
((And go not close to unlawful sex, verily it is a ‘fahisha’ (anything that that transgresses its limits: a great sin) and (it is) an evil way.)
Music plays a great role in stimulating one’s emotions, lusts and passions and also leads to various physiological disorders. This is a proven concept in psychology. Our pious predecessors also understood this well….

Proofs from the Authentic Ahaadeeth

(1) Abû `Amir (or Abû Mâlik) al-Ash`arî (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) mentions that Rasûlullâh sallallâhu ‘alayhi wasallam said: Indeed, there will be in my Ummah such people who will regard as permissible for themselves fornication, silk, wine and musical instruments…..

(Narrated by Imam Bukhari in his Saheeh, Abu Dawood in his Sunan, Ibn Hibbaan in his Saheeh, Tabrani in Mujam al Kabeer and Musnad ash Shamiyeen and by Da’laj in Al Muntaqa)

(2) Nabi (sall Allahu alayhi wasallam) has said: Indeed, people will change the name of wine to consume it and play with musical instruments, Allah will cause the earth to swallow them and change them into monkeys and swines (Narrated by Ibn Majah in his sunan, Ibn Hibbaan in his saheeh, Al Bukhari in Jami al Kabeer, Al Bayhaqi in his Sunan, Al Aadaab and Shuab al Iman, Ibn Abi Shaybah in his Mussannaf, At Tabrani in Al Mujam al Kabeer and Musnad ash Shamiyeen, Al Baghwi, Ibn A’rabi etc)

(3) ‘Imrân ibn Husayn (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) narrates that Rasûlullâh sallallâhu ‘alayhi wasallam said:In this Ummah there will be [people who will be] sunk into the earth, deformed, and upon whom stones will rain from heaven.
When the Sahâbî enquired as to when will that be, Rasûlullâh sallallâhu ‘alayhi wasallam replied: When singing girls and instruments of music will appear (become prevalent), and wine will be drunk. (Narrated by Tirmidhi, Ad Dani, Ibn Abi ad Dunya, Ruyani and others. This hadith is narrated with numerous chains)

NOTE: Because of being narrated through seven different chains, we could have narrated this same hadith as a minimum of seven different Ahadith (as is the practice of Muhaddithoon, In fact, Ibn Abi ad Dunya and others did mention this very same hadith as over seven Ahadith because of the different chains). Nevertheless, we have sufficed by mentioning it only once, and explained all the various chains in Arabic.

(4) Anas bin Malik (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) mentions that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has said: Two voices are cursed in this world and the hereafter; Music at the time of happiness and wailing at the time of calamity (Narrated by Al Bazzar, Adh Dhiyaa al Maqdisi, Ibn Murduyah, Al Bayhaqi, Abu Nuaim and others. Allama Haythami and Allamah Mundhiri both said: “The narrators are reliable” i.e. this hadith is authentic)

(5) Abdur Rahman bin Auf (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) narrates that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has said: Verily I have been prohibited from two asinine and evil voices: a voice at the time of happiness; play, leisure and MUSIC….. (Narrated by Abd bin Humaid, At Tahawi, Al Bazzar, Al Baghwi, Al Bayhaqi, Al Aajuri, Ibn Abi ad Dunya, Al Hakim, Ahmad bin Manee’, Abu Ya’la al Musily, Ibn Abi Shayba and At Tirmidhi said that this narration is ‘hasan’(good and sound)

(6) Abu Muawiyyah (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) narrates that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has said: Verily Allah azza wa jall has sent me with guidance and as a mercy to mankind and (inspite of this) he ordered me to obliterate musical instruments, idols, the cross and things of ignorance (Narrated by At Tayalisi, Ahmad, At Tabrani in Mujam al Kabeer, Ibn Abdul Barr, Hassan Bin Sufyaan, Ibn Munda, Abu Nuaim, Ar Ruyani, Al Harith, Al Ashyab, Al Haythami, Al Ajuri, Ibn An Najjjar, Ibn Adi and others. This hadith is hasan li ghairihi (good because of a few corroborating chains)

(7) Abu Umamah (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) narrates that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has said: A group of my Ummah will spend a night in food, drinks and party, they would wake up the next morning deformed into swine’s and few tribes would be submerged into the earth, people would wake up saying: “The earth has sunk in the locality of a certain tribe. And stones would be showered upon them as it was showered on the nation of Lut. A devastating wind will be sent on them and scatter them as it did to those before them. (The reason for this) will be due to drinking wine, devouring interest, adorning silk, KEEPING SINGING GIRLS and breaking family ties.(A narrator says: “Another quality was mentioned which I cannot recall”.) (Narrated by Ahmad, Ibn Abi ad Dunya, Al Kharaeety, Al Isbahani, At Tayalisi, Abu Nuaim, Ibn Asaakir, Ibn Mardooyah, Al Bayhaqi, Al Hakim and others. Al Hakim graded it as authentic mentioning that it fulfils the conditions of Imam Muslim.)

(8) Nafi (Rahimullah) narrates that Ibn Umar (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) heard the (sound of the) musical instruments of a shepherd. He immediately placed his hands in his ears and changed his route and continuously asked: “Oh Nafi, Can you still hear?” (Nafi says): “I constantly replied in the positive. When I finally said that I could not hear, Ibn Umar resumed his route. Thereafter, Ibn Umar mentioned: “This is what Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) did.” (Narrated by Abu Dawood, Ibn Hibbaan, At Tabrani in Al Kabeer and Al Awsat, Ahmad, Al Bayhaqi, Al Haythami, Al Aajuri, Ibn Sad, Ibn Abi ad Dunya in Al War’ and Dham al malahi and others. This hadith is narrated through chains which are authentic. Abul Fadhl As Sulamy also said that this hadith is authentic)

(9) Abdullah bin Amr narrates from Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has said: “The similitude of a person who sits on the bed of a singing girl is like that person who is devoured by a black snake from the black snakes of the day of Qiyamah.” (Majma az Zawaaid with reference to At Tabrani. Allamah Haythami said that the narrators are authentic)

(10) Kaisan, the freed slave of Muawiyyah (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) says: “Muawiyyah once delivered a sermon in which he said: “Oh people, verily Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) prohibited seven actions and I also prohibit you from: (The nine actions are)…… music…” (Narrated by At Tabrani and Abu Ya’la in his Musnad. Allamah Haythami said that the narrators of one chain are all reliable)

(11) Ibn Abbaas (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) narrates that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has said: “Verily Allah has prohibited wine, gambling and ‘the drum’.” Thereafter he said: “And every intoxicant is forbidden.” (Narrated by Abu Dawood in his Sunan, Ibn Hibbaan in his Saheeh, Abu Ya’la Al Mausali in his Musnad, At Tahawi in Sharh Ma’ani al Aathaar, Al Bayhaqi in his Sunan, Ahmad in his Musnad and Al Ashribah,At Toosi in his Arbaeen,Ibn Al Muqri in his Mujam,Ibn Abi ad Dunya and others. This hadith is authentic)

Proofs from the Sahaaba and Tabi’een

- Abdullah bin Masood (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) has said: “Verily music causes hypocrisy to grow in the heart as water causes plants to grow”.(Bayhaqi, Abu Bakr bin Khilaal in As Sunnah, Ibn Nasr al Marwazy in Tazeem qadr as salaah, Ibn al Batta, Ibn Abi ad Dunya in Dhamm al malahi, Ibn Sasri and others.)

- Numerous Scholars opine that the above statement is a statement of Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam). However, even if we accept it as a statement of Abdullah bin Masood (radiyallâhu ‘anhu), it will still be on the same status of the proclamations of Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) since a statement of this kind cannot possibly be made up by the human mind. Also, keep in mind the following hadith of Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) , “Believe and accept whatever Ibn Masood tells you!” (Narrated by Ahmad and Tirmidhi with a good chain)

- Ibn Abbaas (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) states: “The drum is prohibited, the duff [also pronounced as daff; the first is more eloquent) is prohibited, musical instruments are prohibited and flutes are prohibited” (Al Bayhaqi, Al Mutalib al aaliyah li Ibn Hajar)

- Abdullah bin Busr (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) has said: “…By the oath of Allah, a group of people will be disfigured whilst they are drinking wine and playing with musical instruments until they become like apes and swines” (Narrated by Ad Dulabi in Al Kuna wal Asmaa)

- Adi bin Artaar (rahimahullah) narrates that Auf bin Malik emerged from Damascus heading to a village of Bani Fazarah to visit a friend of his who resided therein. A group of people gathered around him and a discussion ensued. A person enquired: “Who can mention something regarding the followers of Dajjaal.” Auf bin Malik (rahimahullah) replied: “They will be a group who regard wine, silk and music as permissible…” (Tabrani narrated it in Musnad Shamiyyeen)

- Auzai (rahimahullah) mentioned: “Umar bin Abd Azeez wrote to Umar bin Waleed: “…and musical instruments is an innovation in Islam…” (Narrated by An Nasai and Abu Nuaim and the chain of narrators is extremely authentic)

- Abdullah bin Masood (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) has said: “I should not find any of you lying on his back with one leg over the other raising his voice in songs and abandoning the Quran” (Narrated by Al Bayhaqi in Shuab al Iman)

- Abdul Kareem Al Jazari (rahimahullah) mentions: “When you see a person abandoned the Masjid, and spends his time on music and wine, then don’t even ask about him” (Narrated by Al Bayhaqi in Shuab al Iman)

- Fuzail bin Ayaaz (rahimahullah) has said: “Music is the catalyst of zina” (Narrated by Al Bayhaqi in Shuab al Iman)

- Yazeed bin Waleed An Naqidh (rahimahullah) has advised: “Oh Bani Ummayah, save yourselves from music, because it will decrease your modesty, increases your lust and demolishes your morality. It will cause you to incline to wine and cause you to do what a drunken person does. If (as a last resort) you really have to listen to music then, at least save your womenfolk from it for verily music leads to fornication.” (Narrated by Al Bayhaqi in Shuab al Iman)

- Saeed bin Al Musayyab (rahimahullah) claimed: “Verily I hate music and I love ‘rajaz’ (name of a poetical meter)” (Al Baghwi in Sharh as Sunnah)

- A person asked Qasim bin Muhammad (rahimahullah) concerning music. Qasim bin Muhammad (rahimahullah) replied: “I forbid you from it (and let me tell you) I really abhor it.” The questioner asked: “Is it haraam?” Qasim bin Muhammad (rahimahullah) replied: “Oh my nephew, if Allah had to separate truth from falsehood in which category would you put music?” (Narrated by Al Bayhaqi in his Sunan)

- Ishaq (rahimahullah) stated: “I asked Abu Abdillah concerning a person who breaks a drum, mandolin or (pours out) the wine of another person, is there any compensation compulsory upon him?” Abu Abdillah replied: “You should destroy all of these and nothing will be compulsory upon you!” (Narrated by Abu Bakr bin Al Hilaal in Al Amr bil Maroof)

- Hasan Basri (rahimahullah) mentioned: “The duff is not from the sunnats of Muslims in any way” (Ibn Abi ad Dunya in Dhamm al malahi)

- Abi al Qasim narrates that Ibrahim (rahimahullah) abhorred the income of mourners and singers. (Bukhari, Musannaf Abd ar Razzaq, Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah)

- Abu Khalid narrates that Shabi detested the wages of a singing girl. (Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah)

- Amr narrates that Hasan did not like the earnings of a mourner and a singer. (Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah)

- Rafi bin Hafs Al Madani states: “Allah won’t look at four people on the day of Qiyamah…(one of them is).. a singer” (Dhamm al Malahi)

- Abu Yazeed says: “I heard Makhool say: “Whoever dies and has a singing girl in his possession, no salaah (janazah) will be prayed on him.” (Al Amr bil maroof of Abu Bakr Al Khalal)

- Qatada (rahimahullah) has said: “The devils Quran is poetry, his Muadhin is musical instruments and his net is women.” (Fath Al Bari of Ibn Hajar)

- Shawkani (rahimahullah) claimed: “The vast majority of Scholars were of the opinion that music is forbidden.” (Aun al mabood)

- Allamah Anwar Shah Kashmiri (rahimahullah) asserted, “The vast majority of Ulama including Scholars from all four Madhabs maintained that music is forbidden.” (Al Arf as shadhi)

From all these proofs, i don't think that a true believer will have any misunderstanding about music not being halal. It is haram and one should avoid it as apparently it does not seem to take us to hell but it is the first step towards Evil.

May Allah guide us in differentiating b/w Truth and Falsehood.

Allah says in Sorah Al Imran of Glorious Quran:

'When Truth strikes with Falsehood, falsehood perishes, nonetheless, Falsehood by its nature is bound to be perished".

JazakaAllah Khaire....

Music or pictures have nothing to do with Shariah, neither vice versa. Rulings cannot be concluded from Hadith.Only Qur'an and the practices of the Prophets can give Shariah Rulings. We ought to use common sense in this regard. Only the music which is polluted with immodestey must be avoided in order to protect one's state of purity and faith. Similarly the pictures that are used for worshipping or neudidity or giving wrong messages like that of war, violence, drugs, illegitimate sex etc must be abondoned.

The primary sources of Islamic law (shariah)are the Qur'an and Sunnah.

To this, traditional Sunni Muslims add the consensus (ijma) of the Prophet's companions (sahaba) and Islamic jurists (ulema) on certain issues, and drawing analogy from the essence of divine principles and preceding rulings (qiyas).

In situations where no concrete rules exist under the sources, law scholars use qiyas — various forms of reasoning, including by analogy.

The consensus of the community or people, public interest, and others are also accepted as secondary sources where the first four primary sources allow.

Shi'as on the other hand reject this approach. They strongly reject analogy (qiyas) and also reject consensus (ijma) as having any particular value in its own

He has also produced the following Proofs from the Qur’an:.

(1) Allah Taala mentions

((From amongst men there are those who
purchase ‘lahw al hadith’ without knowledge, to mislead from the Path of Allah and they ridicule it. For them there is a humiliating punishment)). (Luqmân: 6)

(2) In Surah Bani Israeel, Allah Ta’ala mentioned to the devil

((And gradually befool those who you can from them with your voice (songs, music etc)….) (Bani Israeel 64)

Message: The type of environment I see around me and when I see patients with various social problems, I really feel that the populr type of music here and alcohol together does not play a very good part in this all.
However , as any other art and fine art, we must keep this fine balance and instead of banning things altogether, we must try and understand the issue. Even when the Prophet sws condemned it, the problem was not 'music' per se, its the type of music which can or cannot lead to evil. There is good use of music which can lead to lots of goodness e.g. in religious and national songs
& also rhymes for children's teachings etc.

I fully agree with your point sister, but please note that what I have quoted or what I have appreciated in my previous post is Proofs from the Qur’an:.Arabic verses and translation of meaning in English.--- and NOT the distorted views of any sect.
