sex education~what to include/exclude;muslim gover

i think it's a sensitive issue regarding our children's education re: an important subject, and we must participate and check the details from the schools and discuss/understand our concerns with the governors & people of knowledge about the subject as well as the people who know well about our deen.
what AMG is presenting is open to be heard and open to criticism.

Dr.HKhan
Parent Partnership Governor
Royal County

Assalamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu Governors,

The Association of Muslim Governors [AMG] presents:

SEX EDUCATION IN STATE SCHOOLS: WHAT? WHY? HOW? WHEN? WHO?

Delivered by Yusuf Patel from SREIslamic*

Date: Saturday 15th August 2009
Time: 7:15pm (Asar)
Venue: Crawley Masjid, 157 London Road, Langley Green, Crawley RH10 9TA
[Masjid car park on Depot Road]

Last Autumn the Government announced that lessons about personal,
social and health matters including sex and relationships will be
compulsory in all England's schools from ages five to 16. As Muslim
parents, teachers and school governors, the subject of Sex and
Relationship Education (SRE) has always been an uncomfortable one. On
the one hand we are aware of the falling moral standards and the other
hand the lack of response from the Muslim community leading to our
children developing dual personalities.

The UK has the highest teenage pregnancy rate in Western Europe1, a
recent UNICEF report placed Britain at the bottom of the league of 21
developed countries for children's well-being. Amid this chaotic
picture there are growing calls to teach Sex and Relationship
Education (SRE) at an even earlier age.

This workshop will enable School Governors :
- Have a deeper understanding of Sex and Relationship Education (SRE)
- What guidelines have the Government set for teaching SRE?
- What does the repeal of Section 28 mean for schools?
- What is the Role of the Governing Body i.e. School Governors?
- What is the role of the Local Community, Parents and Mosques?
- Do parents have the right to Opt-Out?
- Towards devising a SRE policy suitable to your school
- Watch a sample video of SRE shown in schools
- Practical advice

Please come to this seminar to learn, share and develop a strategy to
go forward. You do not need to be a parent or a governor to attend!
Inshallah a local Mufti/Imam will be present and an experienced local
state school teacher of SRE for advice. We are working in conjuction
with SREIslamic, a campaign group challenging the government's
proposals from an Islamic perspective. Visit the campaign blog
and sign the online petition: http://sreislamic.wordpress.com

ALL welcome as admission is FREE but PRE-REGISTRATION
is required. To register or for more information please call

Inshallah we hope to see you there!

I think we should also have this system in Pakistan. People don't want to talk about sex here but under cover lots of crimes like sexual abuse happen even within families. Muslims have to be more keen about sex education in the light of Islam and modern medicine. Our younger generation specially has no guidance whatsoever and as they enter puberty and high schools or colleges, the present so called "freedom" allures them and whatever they watch and get from the media, movies including Indian and Western, also Pakistani itself mashalla!!! and love filled songs incline them further towards the so called "Love" or "Ishq", free mixing which is all naturally followed by illigitimate and pre-marital sexual relationships because early marriages are not in fashion anyway and religious education available in extremely poor quality and quantity.
So much so that even gay relationships are becoming more and more common here now under the cover of various labels and reasons trying to make them halal.I read a joke in a western magazine the other day that an Iranian man went to a sexual health clinic and said that he wanted medicine because he had sex with a donkey, whereas actually he had had sex with a man but was scared of being executed, hence lied!!
Specially during Ramadan our ulama must come forward and spread information around about these issues by involving with them the religious doctors in this speciality in order to bring in a package of sound information based on religion and medical knowledge both.

You better think about this one because a school has been closed down by the education department because their science books had a unit of sex education. It's now 5 days and they still haven't resumed their classes, this has got us worried, we have a whole unit of reproduction in our'O' level biology so now what , are we next?

As for help for teenagers if they find themselves in a crisis situation there is a crisis helpline which the teenagers can dial and talk to a crisis Councillor who will talk to them without asking their identity and try and help them out or give the information they need. It's called Rozan.THe youth helpline number is free
0600-22444 Rozan works on sexual abuse specially childhood abuse.
this is alink to their website http://rozan.org/component/option,com_frontpage/Itemid,1/
and the link to Aahung is http://www.aahung.org/ So how far we can go and how long can these dedicated people last who knows. Sometimes it seems like a loosing battle.

i did not understand the issue of sex education in schools. how is our perception of the sex education in schools. we need to look at the issue from the perspective of islamic thoughts enshrined in holy book and sunna, beside having due consideration to realiteis of todays world, which is causing havoc to society.

What part of this issue is not clear? We in Pakistan are living in very difficult condition any thing can happen at any time. Just to teach a chapter in biology which is reproduction in which methods of prevention of pregnency is discussed that was attacked, then how can you expect to have sex eucation class even using the islamic perspective.
