Root: ع ق ل! Intellect--Metonymically الجماع

http://haqeeqat.org.pk/English%20Tafsir%20e%20Haqeeqat/00.%20Tabweeb/0003.A%20Aql%20intellect/0003.A%20Aql%20intellect.htm

TextRoot: ع ق ل

Words from this Root in the Grand Qur'aan:
a) Total occurrences: 49
b) No of constructions: 5
The basic perception infolded in the Root is to "captivate", "imprison", "save and to make safe"," confine", "withholding", "restraining". المعقل means "the place to which one has recourse for protection". And once anything is saved and protected it results in the feel of strength, security and tranquility.
And the act of captivating and placing thing in the protected environment is withholding, binding or becoming in a bound state. Therefore عقال means rope; rope binds things and makes them save and protected from scattering. This binding creates a link-a reference.
Metonymically it is used equivalent to الجماع as meaning the act of taking a woman/ one's wife in the fold of hands and compressing her with the chest. [Lane's Lexicon]
And its superfine perception and meanings is what we call intellect which is the domain of brain. Without going into the niceties and delicacies of the discussions of philosophers and the brain scientists, for us it suffices that intelligence/intellect is the faculty/capability to reason, solve problems, think abstractly, learn and understand new material and profit from the past experiences. And all this is possible and dependant upon knowledge of things. A man is born, joins the association of humanity with a clean slate, without information/knowledge of any thing:Cont

Thank you for the informative piece. I don't think man is borne with a clean slate. experience tells us that human being is borne with innate guidance. Quran also confirms that.

Thanks Shahzads,

It seems you did not go through the entire page/lonk
Allah swt says
وَاللّهُ أَخْرَجَكُم مِّن بُطُونِ أُمَّهَاتِكُمْ لاَ تَعْلَمُونَ شَيْئًا
"You did not have informaion/cognition/knowledge/perception of anything".
شَيْئًا is anything that has dimensions. Allah is NOT but other than شَيْئًا. So this Ayah is not negating this aspect.
