Explanation of the Qura’nic verse, 64:14???


[64: 14] O you who believe! Surely from among your wives and your children there is an enemy to you; therefore beware of them; and if you pardon and forbear and forgive, then surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful

What is explanation of this Qura’nic verse???

the word used is 'zawj'. it means 'spouse' which, if you pick up a dictionary, means either wife or husband.

luckily Islam (which i am proud to say is a totally complete religion) offers advice in circumstances where ones spouse or children are pressurising them to do something unIslamic.
how often ive heard of a husband forcing his wife to drink, or children emotionally blackmailing their parents into buying them toys using haraam money. yes, our families are a test for us, and Allah has said that if you follow what they tell you to do in such a situation, then you are indeed following satan - and in this case the enemy is within your nearest and dearest.

please dont accuse Islam of being so unjust to its woman, Islam grants women respect, which is more than what i can say for any other religion.

This Verse refers to the orphan girl who is under the guardianship of her guardian who likes her beauty and wealth and wishes to (marry her and) curtails her Mahr. Such guardians have been forbidden to marry them unless they do justice by giving them their full Mahr, and they have been ordered to marry other than them. The people asked for the verdict of Allah's Apostle after that, so Allah revealed: 'They ask your instruction concerning the women... whom you desire to marry.' (4.127) So Allah revealed to them that if the orphan girl had beauty and wealth, they desired to marry her and for her family status. They can only marry them if they give them their full Mahr. And if they had no desire to marry them because of their lack of wealth and beauty, they would leave them and marry other women. So, as they used to leave them, when they had no interest, in them, they were forbidden to marry them when they had such interest, unless they treated them justly and gave them their full Mahr. Apostle said, 'If at all there is evil omen, it is in the horse, the woman and the house." a lady is to be warded off. And the Statement of Allah: 'Truly, among your wives and your children, there are enemies for you (i.e. may stop you from the obedience of Allah)'(64:14)

Hope, the meaning of 64:14 is very clear by the hadiths of SahiBukhari!

64:14 O YOU who have attained to faith! Behold, some of your spouses [1] and your children are enemies unto you: so beware of them! [2] But if you pardon [their faults] and forbear, and forgive-then, behold, God will be much-forgiving, a dispenser of grace.

1. i.e., "sometimes, your spouses.. .", etc. Since, in the teachings of the Qur’an, all moral duties are binding on women as well as on men, it is obvious that the term azwajikum must not be rendered as "your wives", but is to be understood - according to classical Arabic usage - as applying equally to both the male and the female partners in a marriage.(Quran Ref: 64:14 )

2.Love of his or her family may sometimes tempt a believer to act contrary to the demands of conscience and faith; and, occasionally, one or another of the loved ones - whether wife or husband or child - may consciously try to induce the person concerned to abandon some of his or her moral commitments in order to satisfy some real or imaginary "family interest", and thus becomes the other's spiritual "enemy". It is to this latter eventuality that the next sentence alludes.(Quran Ref: 64:14 )

ps re: your evidence from ahadith
ps our Studying Islam course 'intro to hadith'
hadith is a treasure of knowledge as it is the ilm/knowledge of the prophet sws. however we cannot derive shariah/law from hadith;
deen is completed from its basic source Qur'an and the teachings of all the prophets sws of the past as ratified by the last prophet Muhammad sws/pbuh- which has reached us solidified and as reliable as Qur'an-the Sunnah of the prophet sws.

the melonchaly of muslim ummah from the past 8 centuries re: hadith /narrations from the prophet sws is that they have stopped working on the science of hadith and just apply them where they want out of the rules of the science of hadith-out of context-derive laws from them and present as evidence.

all the above quoted narrations need looking at individually in the context and all the scientific facts related to ilmul hadith. Qur'an and the prophet sws have uplifted woman in the society and never degraded as it is being presented in the above postings.


we must learn our lessons from the chaos salman rushdie has created , again on the basis of quotations from hadith-trying to prove the prophet sws as womaniser, sex maniac and hate warrior(naoozubillah) which some other writers on these forums have repeated sadly.

The following Hadith is often presented to support the view that women will outnumber men in Hell:


عن أبي سعيد الخدري قال خرج رسول الله في أضحى أو فطر إلى المصلى فمر على النساء فقال يا معشر النساء تصدقن فإني أريتكن أكثر أهل النار فقلن وبم يا رسول الله قال تكثرن اللعن وتكفرن العشير (بخارى رقم: 298)

Abu Sa‘id Khudri reported: Allah’s Messenger (sws) went out to the place of worship on the day of ‘Idu’l Adha or Fitr and he passed by the women and said to them: ‘O Women, give charity for I have been shown the majority amongst you as the inmates of Hell’. They said: ‘Allah’s Messenger, wherefore?’ He said: ‘It is because you curse one another very much and show ungratefulness to your husbands’. (Bukhari, No: 298)

This inference is incorrect and has arisen by not properly appreciating a particular style of communication used in certain Ahadith which depict dreams of the Prophet (sws). Such dreams are a source of revelation for the Prophets of Allah and in them they are shown certain images by the Almighty for the purpose of educating Muslim men and women. As a principle, all such dreams are not to be interpreted literally; they contain realities which are depicted in symbolic form.

Symbolic representation is a very subtle and powerful way of expression: Facts seem veiled yet for him who pauses to ponder they are the most evident. They move a person in the manner poetry does. They ignite in a person the spark to look behind the apparent. They urge him to reflect and to meditate and then to discover and to infer. They educate him without rousing his prejudices. The Prophets of Allah (sws) have effectively employed this technique of communication. The words and discourses of the Prophets Joseph (sws) and Jesus (sws) for example are full of powerful parables and subtle symbolism. The dream of the Prophet Joseph (sws) and the way he interpreted it is mentioned in the Qur’an also. If he saw in his dream that the sun and the moon and eleven stars were bowing before him in prostration, he knew that these heavenly bodies symbolized certain personalities.


The Ahadith which depict more women in Hell should also be interpreted keeping in view this basic principle. These Ahadith do not delineate the population of women in Hell since this would be a literal interpretation; on the contrary, they just caution them that there are certain deeds which they do a lot and which, therefore, would be more instrumental in taking them to Hell; so they should avoid them. In other words, the symbolism is causative in nature. In the above quoted Hadith, the cause has been symbolized to warn women of something which they often do.
