women's education and islam

a muslim speaker was Q by a jewish woman this evening in an interfaith event at a local synagogue that why are women not allowed to be educated in islamic countries and she gave the e.g. of afghanistan. the speaker dr saleem replied that islam does not lay any restriction on women's education-it is the matter of local culture and traditions.

what about the follow up questions.eg
when Islam doesnt stop women regarding education then who stops them?

when Islam encourages education for all then why so much illiterates in this community?

cultural/traditional reasons. individual narrow-mindedness.

we hv seen cases in uk where husbands clearly say that they do not wish their wives to learn english or how to drive as there is a high chance that these women will then "get out of hand"
