TV and Games are haram?

Assalam Aleikom

I've come across a few people who say that TV is haram, as well as things like video games. I've never really gotten into this debate with them because it is so absurd that i didn't want to disturb any electrons in my brain.

Though i'm wondering, what do these people who think TV is haram base their conclusion upon?

Asalam Aalaikum

What can you expect from such people who donot have proper understanding of the teachings of Islam. Do you know their are still some Muslims who believe that Islam should be preached by sword and they claim that a person can only become a true muslim if he is converted by sword.

Iam also surprised to see these kinds of claims in this information age.I know their are some Muslim Scholars who prohibit children from playing Video Games and watching Cartoons because they believe that these things come under the catagory of useless amusement. Not only this, they also believe that children should not play with dolls.

I also donot like this claim from the Muslim Scholars because I donot see any harm in playing video games and watching cartoon. These Scholars should be asked that what haram do they see in these things.

I think the example of TV is analogous to what Imam Ghazali said about music. It depends on the kind of music, it can be good or bad. Eg. glorifying Allah in music by singing His attributes cannot be haram. Whereas singing half naked with curse words cannot be any good. Same way I think watching porn and dirty stuff on TV cannot be any good. And watching educational channels cannot be called haram.

It is ignorant to generalize something so comprehensive and call it totally haram. If you feel it is more harmful than useful, then you should avoid it.

TV can be a pretty active way of learning ya know...and all these new channels that r coming out such as the islam channel etc...theyr pretty gud 2 watch and learn stuff about islam interactively instead of reading a random book uve been recommended but its so long that u fall asleep b4 the second page...
and instead of passing harsh comments about sinning if u relax a little by playin a video game or watchin a little tv and calling a tv a 'shatan box' like my teacher used 2 wudnt really help...
but the reason y sum ppl r mostly against it is becuz kids find it so hard 2 prioritise their time and get addicted 2 it ...and b4 ya know its its all u ever do or think about!
as long as u dont reach THAT state of mind then it shud b fine
oh and remember
ur eyes/ears are for Allah- use them apropriately
no shows with xplicit contents!
lingo and images included!

U r right dear TWEETY

but We Should keep this Important point Always FRESH in our BUSY minds THAT:

* To decide What's Haraam & What's Halaal is NOT our concern. It HAS already BEEN decided by Allah & His Prophet (pbuh).
* Things Like TV etc.cannot be TAKEN as COMPLETELY Haraam, if it were so in someone's point of View, as every COMMON man klnows it's Halaal & USEFUL usages.
* The Best possible Wording about these type of things MAY be that Every Muslim User should be REMINDED that He/She should be VERY Careful while USING these things BECAUSE our GOOD & RIGHT use will bring REWARD for us & our BAD & WRONG use will surely bring PUNISHMENT for us.

If I'm NOT right dear READERS then CORRECT me plz. I'll be thank ful to you ALL.

I agree on the following saying, which I found one of the best.

“* The Best possible Wording about these type of things MAY be that Every Muslim User should be REMINDED that He/She should be VERY Careful while USING these things BECAUSE our GOOD & RIGHT use will bring REWARD for us & our BAD & WRONG use will surely bring PUNISHMENT for us”
