Here are few of the verses of the Koran which clearly show the meaning of dharaba as [b]beating and no other.[/b]

[2.60]- وَإِذِ اسْتَسْقَى مُوسَى لِقَوْمِهِ فَقُلْنَا اضْرِبْ بِعَصَاكَ الْحَجَرَ فَانْفَجَرَتْ مِنْهُ اثْنَتَا عَشْرَةَ عَيْنًا قَدْ عَلِمَ كُلُّ أُنَاسٍ مَشْرَبَهُمْ كُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا مِنْ رِزْقِ اللَّهِ وَلا تَعْثَوْا فِي الأرْضِ مُفْسِدِينَ

[2.60]- And when Musa prayed for drink for his people, We said: [size=4][blue]Strike (adhrib)[/blue][/size=4] the rock [size=4][blue] with your staff.[/blue][/size=4]  So there gushed from it twelve springs; each tribe knew its drinking place: Eat and drink of the provisions of Allah and do not act  corruptly in the land, making mischief.

[8.12]- إِذْ يُوحِي رَبُّكَ إِلَى الْمَلائِكَةِ أَنِّي مَعَكُمْ فَثَبِّتُوا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا سَأُلْقِي فِي قُلُوبِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا الرُّعْبَ فَاضْرِبُوا فَوْقَ الأعْنَاقِ وَاضْرِبُوا مِنْهُمْ كُلَّ بَنَانٍ

[8.12]- When your Lord revealed to the angels: I am with you; therefore make firm those who believe. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore [size=4][blue]Strike (adhrabu)[/blue][/size=4] off their heads and every fingertip of them.

[8.13] This is because they acted adversely to Allah and His Apostle; and  whoever acts adversely to Allah and His Apostle [b]then surely Allah is  severe in requiting (evil).[/b][/quote]
